Shifting Sands - Desert Mysteries- [Homebrew] [Free session 0]
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
In the great trading lands of Merkwar, too many threads are meeting, too many problems are imminent for even the vast dunes of the desert to bury them. The rise of the flying city, Svantoul, and its dominion to the east, especially their Dragon Riders has shaken the balance of power, and nothing seems certain anymore. The lands of the south, led, as ever, by the ruling council of traders, have more to worry about than the machinations of their rivals, cultists, outcasts, bandits, or assassins. The south now looks to the skies not only to spot dragons, but in worry that the great Azure City itself will float their direction. Small ripples in the sand dunes can cause titanic shifts in balance. Chaos is a great opportunity for gain - or for destruction. What, if anything, is behind this? Can the region survive intact? Can you? Shifting Sands takes place in a fully homebrew world, and will include elements of intrigue, exploration, mystery, and adventure. This is a project coming out of years of work and development, and I am certain you will enjoy it!
Game style
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Alex is an outstanding Dungeon Master in our Dungeons & Dragons campaign. He fosters creativity among players, prepares meticulously for each session, and navigates challenges with grace. Playing under his guidance has been a delightful and immersive experience, elevating our adventures to new heights.
Alex is a great DM. He clearly knows the rules and knows the content he is game mastering for. He is also very flexible and rewards creative play. From adding music, to having good handouts, maps, and resources, he is very prepared at each session. Looking forward to many more sessions. Two Thumbs up!
Alex and I have played 5E together for almost 10 years both as a party mate first and later as a dungeon master. As a PC his Oath of Conquest Paladin had many layers of depth and creativity. The class is a difficult to role play and this particular oath has challenges, yet he peerlessly RP’d it. As good of a PC as he is Alex shines most brightly as a DM. Wielding the attributes he holds as a player with all the creativity afforded to him as a dungeon master. These abilities also help him enhance his players’ characters as he weaves them into his homebrew worlds. Some GMs can be extreme rule lawyers. Alex is not one of them. The Rule of Cool usually prevails at his table. For example he once let my level 11 away of Shadows monk run up a wall and Superplex a Giant Grick off it while using a bonus action to teleport my monk back to the ground safely. This turn was all pretty much 5E compliant and he uses Rule of Cool to make the rest happen. If this doesn’t persuade you just how fun of a DM Alex is you’ll just have to book him and find out yourself!
Alex is a reliable DM that never no-shows, rarely had to reschedule and always communicated clearly. He's flexible with "rule of cool", bending the rules when it's a great idea or helps the plot, but stops short of breaking them. Very good about declaring things one time epic moments so it doesn't become a free-for-all. Very proficient with the rules, but humble enough to double check and admit when he doesn't know, then efficient in checking references and savvy enough to know when to just make a provisional ruling and move on. Uses Owlbear Rodeo effectively. Patient with new players. Good flow and pacing.

How to prepare
Please make a discord account if you do not have one. Mic required, camera optional, please. Make an account on Owlbear Rodeo, and download the free icon starter packs in your profile. Digital or physical dice are fine, there's an extension in OR for rolling, but you don't have to use it. I operate on the honour system (plus, always passing every roll makes the game boring!). If you require blank character sheets, I have them and will provide during session 0.
What I provide
For this homebrew project, I am pleased to be able to offer: - a unique, professionally made, customised overworld map. - Curated ambient music - Owlbear Rodeo for a VTT. It's intuitive and allows for smooth combat. - Virtually all official books and some third party ones - And a few supplementary things to enhance builds! Very little is required of my players, just good humour and imagination!
Gameplay details
During session 0, we can discuss what may come up, and the broad theme of the game as well as looking at the broad base of the campaign and establishing characters/party composition as a group (pre-generated characters will be available). We will also establish Lines and Veils. This campaign is less intense than my usual fare akin to Tomb of Annihilation, but be prepared for just about anything!
