About the adventure

Welcome to BBEG of the Week! An homage to the 'villain / monster of the week' style of shows like Doctor Who, Supernatural, Scooby Doo, or Power Rangers where a group of the same characters interact with different villains, difficult scenarios, or other wacky circumstances week to week that handwave the travel between different locations from the end of one episode to the beginning of the next. In this episodic 'light-hearted but still for adults' series of adventures, we will play a series of modules (some official, some homebrew from other sources, some custom homebrew of my own creation) in a 'One-shot' style where each 'adventure episode' should take 1-3+ sessions depending on what the player characters decide to do. This game is for people that are interested in playing DND *without* in depth backstories, complicated overarching storylines, and intricate subplots and are looking for a more laid back / casual experience. Some DND experience is recommended, but not required. Callbacks and recurring villains will likely come up from time to time, but for the most part each adventure will be self-contained with gear, gold, and character levels being the things carrying over from adventure to adventure.

About me

Hail and well met! Over the past 15 years I have played a handful of different TTRPGs, and over the last 5 years I have been running DND 5th edition games for friends, family, and coworkers whenever I can find the time. I enjoy taking character backstories and running adventures, both homebrew and pre-written, that touch on those backstories to bring things to a more personalized place. In my professional life I have management and team leadership experience that give me strong decision making skills in dealing with interpersonal situations. Thank you for taking the time to read through my profile. I look forward to the adventures ahead!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will occur during Session 0, but coming up with a few loose character ideas before the session are encouraged. Characters will start at level 1 with stats from the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or using the Point Buy method from the PHB (Pg 13). We will play with story-based advancement with no need to track XP.

The current party

The official Session 0 happened on Monday January 8th, 2024 but that doesn't mean you can't still join the campaign before the next story beat starts! For those that join now, I will work to schedule a short 1 on 1 session (or even just message back and forth on Discord if that works better) to go over the highlights from my session 0 documentation and to work together on getting a character created.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please have the following: The application Discord installed and an account setup. An account created on DNDBeyond. A suitable microphone for voice chat. (I will be on video, and you are more than welcome to join me, but doing so is not required.) A basic understanding of the rules is encouraged but not essential. Your favorite way to roll dice (physical, website, app) as the honor system will be in play.

What Adam D. brings to the table

As a GM, I tend to stick close to the Rules as written for the consistency that doing so brings, but I do like leaning into creative ideas and embracing the Rule of Cool when the moment is right. For voice/video chat we will use Discord which will require you to have an account. I have access to a lot of character options on DNDBeyond and will share my owned content in my campaigns which will require you to have an account. We will run combat through Owlbear Rodeo, a lite VTT that doesn't require you to create an account. I am no voice actor, but that doesn't stop me from trying my best with NPC voices!

Safety

How Adam D. creates a safe table

We will start with a comprehensive session 0 where we will go over my social behavior expectations and safety tools, GM style and rules clarifications, the 'fantasy world' where our game will take place, character creation, and a short backstory guide. *Note: Characters should not be created before session 0, but loose character ideas are encouraged. You can view the documents I will use as an outline here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16elC24CDI1EmXnT4gtDpZel5LOy3Pdmv?usp=drive_link I use a combination of theater of the mind with some reference images and basic maps as needed using the VTT Owlbear Rodeo. After the sessions are done, decompression and general chatting will be available in the group discord chat. I love feedback as it helps me to know what to keep doing or what to avoid in the future, so keeping an open line of communication is important to me.
