About the adventure

All things roll here: horrors of midnights, Campaigns of a lost year, Dungeons disturbed, and groves of lights; Echoing on these shores, still clear, Dead ecstasies of questing knights— Yet how the wind revives us here! —Arthur Rimbaud Welcome to The Sunless Citadel. This revamped classic is one of the best adventures ever written for introducing new players to Dungeons and Dragons. Without revealing too much there is a distant fortress that became buried in the earth long ago. Inside this Sunless Citadel lie creatures and secrets that have been lost too recent memory. The campaign provides critical Roleplaying encounters, fast-paced combat, simple rules and a few twists and surprises thrown in for good measure. It is my favorite way to welcome new players into this amazing hobby.  Most of my gaming schedule is for fun blown adventures and campaigns, but I like to mix this one into my schedule when I can. It just provides an amazing starting point. Many players that run The Sunless Citadel with me end up migrating to my other, longer games. If you would like to play in longer campaign but are concerned with the time commitment, this can be a great launching pad. And if you want to keep going, I will have options for that as well. This is a short micro adventure that lasts usually between 3-5 play sessions. Characters will start out at level 1 and end at level 3. Seasoned and Veteran players are welcome to the game as well. I will have something for people of all skill levels.

About me

Hi! I’m Zeno and I grew up with games.  My dad started with the Red Box. My mom started in 2nd edition. I’ve been playing in a weekly game since near birth. I can’t remember a time before I was playing. Soon I ran my own games with my own groups. I’ve always been a DM first, player second, but in a house with two static DM’s I needed to build my own groups.  Soon I was running a Pathfinder 1E games for one group, DND 5E games for a different group and Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG for another group! Until the pandemic put a quick end to in-person gaming. That first six months was pretty rough. I poured myself into my work and writing but it was not a simple change. The more I wrote and the more content I created just created a further longing for me to return to the table.  I hoped to always return to in person games but after six months little in the world had changed. I was worried that I could not transition everything to a digital environment. The props, the voices, the mannerisms, the engaging story and most of all the dynamic relationship with the characters. But the only logical path forward to continue doing what I loved was to go digital.  After a few weeks I quickly found out what I was missing.  Nothing. Not only was I able to bring my style of game to a digital audience but I actually thrived there. I got to run games for so many wonderful players. I got to reach an international audience that I would have never been able to play with otherwise and run games for players young and old, beginner and experienced players. Much love to all my players and fellow gamers for all the support that makes this wonderful gig of running a memorable game possible! If you are interested in Dungeons and Dragons, or Role-playing in general, or just want to introduce yourself, kick me over a message and let’s get playing!

Character creation

Creating your character

All characters will start at 1st level. We will use the Roll20 charactermancer to make characters in Session 0 and I will be there to walk you through it every step of the way. This will allow us to build a cohesive party, work on your characters backgrounds and go over game setup before we play. This is a great time to ask questions about the game or learn about how to use and use roll20. We will go over some resources, tools I use and share, safety concerns and more. If this is your first game and you are uncomfortable with making a character, I will bring a bunch of characters with me that are available for you to choose from.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

** A working computer ** Join the Discord ** A free Roll20 Account. (https://app.roll20.net/create-account) ** A microphone and speakers or headset ** I strongly recommend a webcam ** Snacks and a drink if you want them nearby ** All other materials needed for the game I will provide.

What Zeno brings to the table

** Roll20 Pro Plan with all the Core books & many additional books ** The Campaign ** A Webpage with links and tutorials to help new and veteran players ** A Discord server so players can communicate during off session times ** Roll20 forums for another chat option

How Zeno creates a safe table

I built all of my games on Roleplaying, Exploration and Combat. Sunless Citadel is heavy on the Combat. All games I run have very real combat threats and there is a serious chance of not making it out of encounters. Player Death happens. To read more about my game philosophy please see my about me page here — https://startplaying.games/gm/zenoblack. Everyone is welcome in my games and all players should feel welcomed. The game is a safe space for everyone without judgement or bias. I try to not be over the top with my descriptions. The game will have mature themes to be sure but I try to keep things balanced. My aim is around the PG13 rating. There could be scenes that push that a bit but my aim is for Fantasy, not gritty-grim dark horror. I try to list the content warnings of everything that may happen in the game but sometimes things unexpected pop up from time to time. Remember that you have power as a player. If anything happens which makes you uncomfortable, please speak up so we can figure out a solution to it. Things are sensitive to people for different reasons so always use your voice or private chat with me to let me know how you feel. Any poor behavior caused by a player that prevents the group from enjoying their time in my games will not be tolerated. This is notice, I don’t tolerate “those types” of players. Don’t do things with malice to others. We’re Heroes. Act like it.
