About me

I've been playing roleplaying games since I was a teenager in the '80s... "Stranger Things" could have been about me and my friends (minus all the actual killing and stuff of course.) I'm a former history teacher, and I love taking historical settings and twisting them into alternate (often weird) versions of themselves for roleplaying ideas.

My preferences

I like to play...

Dungeons & Dragons 5e
Fate Core System
Savage Worlds
Shadowrun
GURPS
Deadlands
Carbon 2185
Cyberpunk 2020
Traveller
Twilight 2000
Board and Card Games

Erick is a highly engaging gamemaster. His use of dynamic maps, musical themes, and animated illustrations really enhance the immersion in his games. He is a thorough and patient teacher, and actively embraces "the Rule of Cool." I learned a lot in his session, and would highly recommend him.

Tom is a great GM, who understands the value of encouraging genuine player engagement! His Fallout RPG sessions have been entertaining and a lot of fun. He goes the extra mile to help his players become immersed in the game, with atmospheric music, scenery, and backdrops prepared through Roll20. He puts a lot of work into his game prep, and it shows! I recommend you check him out!

I joined Friday's Ad Copy workshop seminar with very high hopes... but within the first 15 minutes, I felt like I was about to be generally talked down to for the next hour. She quickly confirmed this impression when she declared that if you used AI art instead of paying someone else to make art for you - regardless of your ability to afford that or not - then (and this is a quote) "you have no place running a business." I found this to be insulting and exclusionary, which was an extremely surprising and unexpected stance from someone who broadcasts inclusivity. Although I'm certain Friday has a lot to offer as a gamemaster, in terms of her workshop, I found it very difficult to take any of her other advice seriously once the perceived tone of "you should feel stupid for disagreeing with me" was established. It was incredibly disappointing.

PROS * Put a lot of work into creating a customized Roll20 game space, complete with sound effects and music. * Provided a lot of setting lore documents and well-researched historical information for the campaign. * Very promising premise and interesting campaign idea. * First session was free.... BUT.... CONS * ... that free first session was not done according to StartPlaying's procedures. Instead of changing the booking price for the first session, Kaspar simply kept the game "inactive." * No explanations for the aforementioned heavily customized game space. TONS of custom macros with no introduction as to their use. * No character sheets uploaded... everything relied on those custom macros. * No discussion of safety tools prior to start. * No accommodations for novice players who were not familiar/comfortable with the GURPS system (we had a couple). * Lack of rules consistency in play. * Lack of engagement with the players. (Lots of long silences and delays after players discussed plans, as we waited for Kaspar to engage with or respond to us.) * Too many simple "No, you can't do that" responses instead of encouraging creative gameplay and problem solving. * Inconsistent communication with players prior to start of game, so we weren't actually sure if/when the first session was going to be until we prodded the GM for a response. * Combat was all over the place (and not in a good way), with more inconsistent application of rules, poor sense of turn order, some GM-dictated player actions, etc. * First session was... sadly, more than a bit boring and did not deliver. In summary, this game was a lot of promise but not enough delivery. Lots of flash, but very little substance. I had high hopes... but the cons definitely outweighed the pros here. I withdrew after the first session, and I am sorry to say, I am unlikely to join another of Kaspar's games.
