Whether "keeping" or playing Call of Cthulhu, the game presents a ton of fun and a chance to have deeper role playing, investigation, puzzle solving and really live in a brain-breaking world that gradually takes your sanity. It is suitable for campaigns and one-shots. One-shots with well though out pre-gens are common and provide you with a background that fits the scenario and helps you roleplay. Campaign play allows for character development (if you survive in body and mind). The official and community scenarios provide great stories that unravel and allow for player storytelling. Often set in the 1920s USA, but can be played in modern era, wild west, regency England, in the dark ages and more. The main difference between CoC and well known RPGs is that you are a normal person. Combat is deadly and avoiding it or having a cunning plan are good options. Not being precious about your character helps as they often die and you will have a new character to play. The rules are easy enough to pick up to play a game. You can play without reading them or do one of the "choice your own adventures" to learn the basics. Best way is to get playing.
Jacob brings life to the game and gets the best out of the players' and their character. He creates the space for you to become your character for a few hours and be that hero. Nice mix of the three pillars. Jacob's game left me with a satisfying feeling of a job completed and well done by the party.
