Adam’s Dune game for beginners was the most fun I’ve had as a player in a long time. As the regular GM for my friends, I come to Start Playing Games to play one-shots so that I have a chance to be a player and also to learn new systems and settings. Adam’s game was relaxed and fun but not chaotic. He was good at explaining the rules to those of us new to the 2D20 system and fielding questions without being derailed. He gave everyone time in the spotlight and definitely welcomed creative ideas. I also liked his “Stars and Wishes” post-game wrap-up method and plan to adopt it for my own games. I will definitely play with Adam again! I had a super fun time!
I played in a one-shot run by Agent and had a great time. Agent accommodated several different styles of play, from crunchy to social-focused, smoothly and with grace. They demonstrated a deep understanding of the Forgotten Realms setting and even had a couple of "easter eggs" for us D&D geeks to find. Because they had a strong grasp of story, NPCs and world, they were able to adapt on the fly to our story and character choices, even the weird or zany ones. I appreciated that they let me enjoy a very small, whimsical bit of romance with my character and an NPC without allowing it to overshadow what everyone else was doing. And I found out some really important info for our mission from my in-character crush too! :)
I played in a one-shot Dresden Files game TJ ran using the Cypher System rules. I had never played a Cypher System game nor had the other players. TJ was great at explaining things to us while keeping the action going. We had a good balance of roleplay, action and investigation. The story was set in NYC and I particularly enjoyed that when we found clues we (the players) got to internet search for more info on those clues, which in turn was used by our characters. He also used public locations in NYC that we could get a great view of using Google Maps satellite view. He provided good prompting and clues to get us moving to the next point of the story when we got distracted. This was not railroading but rather a way of keeping us on track to finish the story since it was a one-shot. Our group did some silly, fun roleplay, which he incorporated with no problem. Overall, we all had a great time! I definitely recommend TJ as a GM and would join one of his games in future with no hesitation.
I would highly recommend Mythrin as a GM. They run a fun game that is a good mix of action, social roleplay, and exploring. They challenge our party but never make the fight or situation hopeless. This in no way means we always win or succeed, just that we generally feel we at least have a shot at it. :) They allow player creativity in both fighting and problem solving. They also allow my character to pursue a relationship with an NPC in a sweet, romantic way, which I really enjoy. They are well-versed in D&D 5e rules as well as in running games on Foundry. I enjoy the music, voices, and visual effects they incorporate into our games. I also appreciate that we are allowed to use D&D Beyond/Beyond 20. Last but not least, Mythrin uses good safety tools and as a queer person, I feel comfortable in their game.
