About Martin V

My name is Martin and I have been playing running DND for almost a decade. My pedigree in the system actually begins with ADND thanks to my friend's father and a lot of my games have this underlying old school current running through it. I strongly believe in Matt Colville's line of "A DM is only as good as the materials they steal from" Thankfully, my media taste is extremely eclectic. I have directly quotes songs, writers, and movies without my players knowing. Here is a prog rock song I can take as direct inspiration and no one will know. Lets lift dialogue straight from Death of a Salesman. This is why my players all say my world feels real and lived in.

I became a GM because

I was inspired. I was a player in my friend's father's game and I just loved it and wanted to show my friends how fun DnD can be; and the best way to do that was to become the DM and run for them.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Fair, scheming, and grounded. I know my rules fairly well and I will always try to side on what is more fun, but I can put my foot down. I love plotting my players demise and putting a tough encounter for them to overcome. Lastly the characters in my world are grounded, they have their own beliefs.

When I'm not running games I'm...

I'm listening to my music to be inspired, journalling in coffee bars, finding time to see my friends and overall trying experience and learn much about the world as I can; so in return I can show it to my players.

How Martin V runs games

If I had to sum my DM'ing up its 65% Matt Colville, 25% Ginny Di, and 10% whatever music, books or movies I have recently watched. I love my combat; I love thinking and designing fights that are a constant swinging pendulum, momentum can easy switch sides. I expect my players to be on the top of their game knowing their spells and next moves, because I like playing my monsters like they should be played. The Lich knows to target the healers first, and to make sure they stay dead, the zombies will walk in a straight line ignoring fire, pits and any other dangers that might be in their path, bandits will see their friends killed in a single swing and think twice on why they picked a fight with you. Expect my combat to have weight and all my enemies to be dynamic. I love my exploration. There is such a unique feeling of going through a dungeon, unsure of what you will find, what mysteries lie in the wilderness. The world of DnD is set in a post-apocalyptic setting; what ruins will you have to comb through to find the magical items and riches of old? Step into the unknown and let me guide you with my rich details. Just because you love combat it doesn't mean that you stop loving role-play. I think deeply about my NPCs and what they desire in the world, and how that affects their daily interactions with adventures. Expect rich and grounded characters that feel alive in the world. They will scheme, debate, aid, side with and against you. They all have their own inner world and beliefs.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. Lots of ethereal wierdness mixed attention to details that makes the big picture even more terrifying.

I prep by

I take my time to think out of what the next steps are are try to upload any possible maps I might need, along with enemy tokens being on the map for easy reveals mid session. A little bit of time steam-lines the game later.

My favorite trope is...

Apparently it's weird horses. My players all tell me my horses are extremely bizarre and terrifying creatures that they don't trust. However I think it's playing with time, the past becoming the future and, different timelines melding into the current one.

Martin V's ideal table

While I enjoy showing new players how to play the game, I am looking for experienced players who know the system well. I would love to have a table of players who are engrossed and love to play DnD for the love of the game. To tell stories and fight epic fights, to take gambles and try their luck. Players who know what their PC can do and take the initiative to drive the story forward. Those are the golden players every DM wants.

I love it when a player

Makes a sub-optimal choice because it drives the story or their PC forward. Doom your character for the narrative. I will set it all up and give you the full spotlight.

I think metagaming...

Is less dangerous than most people think. Obviously don't cheat and read the module, that is ruining the fun for everyone at the table and more importantly, its ruining the fun for yourself. However, you're characters live in this world. They are familiar with the monsters in the world.

I think min/maxing...

Is great! I prefer to optimize a character and create a theme vs trying to squeeze every last ounce of power out of a character, but the DND power fantasy is real. Nothing feels better than running some big damaging character thats optimized for a fight.
