About Fitz♦️🍏Also Dragons

Hello there! I'm Fitz (they/he), and I have been a GM for about 10 years—4 of those professionally. I run weekly paid games, high concept one-shots, and have built up quite the tight-knit community over at what we like to call "Also Dragons". Most of the campaigns I run take place in an overarching homebrew setting, spanning different genres, corners of the world, and differing types of magic and technology. Together they paint a larger picture, each player adding a brushstroke.

My favorite books are

I'm a sucker for medieval literature: Thomas Mallory, Boccacio, Norse Sagas and more. Combine the atmosphere of Arthurian fantasy with just about any modern media and you get the sort of cross-genre fantasy I adore bringing to my table!

My favorite shows/movies are

Dark Fantasy has my heart: The Last Unicorn, Labyrinth, the Dark Crystal. Its a certain lost art, the aestheticism that already feels nostalgic even upon first-watch. 90's and early-2000's fantasy, alongside serialized CW shows helped form my love for longform narratives that TTRPGs sate so well!

People are always surprised when I tell them

I don't use VTTs for my games! Forget the headaches of prepping for sessions with Foundry and Roll20, or the learning curve for newbies! For all of my games' maps/combats I use a Discord screenshare method that helps generate an at-the-table feel, reducing the amount we both have to keep track of <3

How Fitz♦️🍏Also Dragons runs games

As a DM and GM, I have experience running several editions of D&D, from 3e to 5e, both editions of Pathfinder, Call of Cthulu, a number of Rules-lite systems, and The Witcher TTRPG. Because of the convenience and accessibility, I typically run 5e using Discord and DnDBeyond as our primary tools. In general, I am pretty laid back as a DM but seek to foster and prioritize meaningful connections between Player Characters and have a roleplay-focussed game, where the players are invested in the world and the things going on around them.

My games focus on...

The player characters should be the crux of the story. Whether its criminal intrigue, political fantasy, or heroic questing the story *could not happen* without the player characters, and their presence and choices should always be the driving force behind things moving forward.

Rules are...

Rules serve as the mechanical chassis which we use to structure the telling of the story. Very often the fun of the game lends itself to the emergent storytelling. A characters success or failure guides the plot, but the opposite is also true: if rules get in the way, they can be ignored or changed!

When it comes to voices

Though voice acting isn't a massive focus in my games, at the very least I strive to differentiate NPCs so that they are recognizable, consistent, and most of all FUN. Serious or silly, accents or modulations, they all have their place, just so long as their use adds to the enjoyment of the game!

Fitz♦️🍏Also Dragons's ideal table

Though storytelling and roleplay take center-stage, I strive to still create that traditional D&D feel. Heroic fantasy forcing the players to grapple with questions of morality, narrative stakes, and whether strength is worth the price it takes to achieve. My players form a generally like-minded community aiming to make lasting connections over the course of long-form campaigns. Though we are laid back, the mix of friendly and professional atmospheres helps us to joke, but also keep the story and session flowing. It's a delicate balance between levity and gameplay, but so long as the dice help do the talking, you'll find no session lacking worthwhile material!

I love it when a player

Taking agency is one of the best things a player can do. Unsure how to slot your backstory into the world? You have full permission to make something up! Yes, there IS a town there. Yes, dwarves DO exist there. If it needs adjusting or rationalization, I'll help to retroactively flesh it out <3

I think metagaming...

Metagaming is the misunderstood middle child of TTRPGs. Do I want players googling statblocks? No. But maybe YOU know lots about something your character's still in the dark about. Ask if making some of those connections would be reasonable, maybe a roll for it? Boundaries and communication.

My perfect party mix is

It's my job as the GM to balance around what YOU want to play: no healer? More potions. It's all in the dynamic and communication. We can make a party of 3 druids and a ranger work, as long as folks are cool with the overlap and the characters each serve different purposes to the story. Have fun!
