About DM Wisdumb
I'm a professional fiction writer and game designer who grew up playing and running D&D games in the '70s-'90s. I spent the past decade as a narrative designer with Hyperkinetic Studios, writing well over half a million words worth of fantasy quests for their RPG Epic Tavern. I've also worked in comics, film, audio fiction, and my debut fantasy novel will be out mid 2026. Recently, I've found myself circling back around to my first love, running games, except this time with a lifetime of experience as a professional storyteller. The folks at Hyperkinetic have also been kind enough to allow me to run games in the story world of Epic Tavern and its comic spinoff Tales from the Fantastical Crimes Unit. So I have this rich story world to explore, with players as new agents at a detective agency tasked with solving crimes committed by supernatural and mythological creatures. Every session is one case start to finish. Who wants to play?

I got started GMing...
as a teenager in the '80s. I attended an afterschool program run by a college professor who taught teachers how to use RPGs to teach gifted kids. I've been designing fantasy worlds for as long as I can remember.

How DM Wisdumb runs games
I've been worldbuilding for a living for a long time, so I always like to provide players with a rich story world to explore. Layered mysteries to uncover and a world that reacts to your decisions. I'm running games in a world I've been building full-time for nearly a decade, so I have an encyclopedic knowledge of the lore and hundreds of quests to draw on as I craft original TTRPG adventures for my players. I've also worked as a fight choreographer, so I love designing a good tactical battle. And there are lots of rich opportunities for roleplay in a story world loaded with strange and wondrous creatures. I don't consider myself an actor, but I have an unusual number of acting credits for a non-actor. So inhabiting various NPCs is fun and natural for me. Every session, I'm looking to take players on a unique journey through a world of my creation.

I prep by
planning the story like seasons of television. Each session is one mission start to finish, and results can drastically reshape the story world you're playing in.
My games focus on...
collaborative storytelling. That's what it's all about. There's no right or wrong way to approach each mission and I love when players throw creative curveballs at me.
