About Mike
Greetings, adventurers! I have 42 years of experience as a DM, 1000+ hours on Roll20, and years of improvisational theatre to make your game spectacular. I’m an award-winning uni prof, so new players can rest easy that I’ll take the time to teach them how to play the game. I'm a former indie musician, and bring that flair and energy to my DMing sessions. Voices and accents? You bet. Music to set the mood? Check! Maps and dynamic lighting? Whatever your computer can handle! I have a large library of tokens and maps on Roll20, as well as many official modules to enhance your online play. I value story over mechanics and rulings over rules. I am a fan of the player characters, not their opponent. At my table, we play to see what happens. If you're looking for something custom, I run a wide variety of games, from D&D 5E to Mörk Borg, Tales from the Loop to Masks: A New Generation, Alien to Mothership, Avatar Legends to Adventures in Middle Earth, Vaesen to We Deal in Lead, and many more.

I got started GMing...
when my dad pulled a Total Party Kill 30 minutes into my first session of D&D ever. I said, "That's okay, we can roll up new characters, right?" He closed the book and said, "Nope, that's it," and walked out of the room. And that's when I became the GM!
My favorite books are
The Lord of the Rings, the Discworld novels (Witches in particular), and His Majesty's Dragon.
When I'm not running games I'm...
reading rulebooks and adventure books and dreaming about more games!
How Mike runs games
Story over mechanics Rulings over rules Voices Faster combat, even when it's 5E Music that sets the mood Friendly

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...
James Gunn! Especially when I run D&D, because Dungeons and Dragons is more like Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad than it is Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones.
I prep by
reviewing character goals and aspirations, reading the adventure, and listening to the playlist that forms the soundtrack.
My games focus on...
Storytelling. Story above everything else. I got into gaming because an advertisement promised it would be like writing a fantasy novel with my friends.
Mike 's ideal table
I like players who can improvise in the moment - if I throw you a roleplaying prompt, can you respond quickly? Players who share the spotlight - a spotlight hog has no place at my table. And neither does a rules lawyer. Or a min maxer. I love creative types, people who want to tell a story collaboratively.

I love it when a player
introduces something to the world through character lore.
I think metagaming...
is essential. What the players know and the characters know are two very different things. Metagaming empowers us to tell better stories.
I think min/maxing...
is fun for some, but not for me.
