About Todd
Merry meet! I am a detail oriented English and Journalism graduate student with focus in mythology and early romanticisim which has aided in my story crafting. I have played extensively, and am returning to the role of DM locally with a group of other friends in a homebrew world of Eldreth that I have been building. (and would have great joy to explore elsewhere). I started playing with friends in 3rd and 3.5 edition Dungeons and Dragons in the point buy skill system. I have crafted campaigns in 4th and 5th editions as well as played in every edition published. I have played in other systems/expansions, such as: Forgotten Realms, Werewolf/Vampire, Star Wars, Pathfinder, Mutants and Masterminds and countless homebrews. I used to have "break this class" competitions with another DM friend where we would create multi-class and cross-class characters we considered unkillable and then fight them against each other. Which has given me a great understanding of crafting challenging, but not overpowered villains. I truly love D&D and TTRPGs. Creating my new campaign has rekindled that burning passion that laid dormant for so many years. I believe myself more than capable of being an excellent professional DM.

I became a GM because
I am a storyteller. Stories and oratory came naturally to me, and after honing my craft, worlds evolved at my fingertips.
My favorite books are
Lord of the Rings, Edgar Allen Poe, H.G. Wells, H.P. Lovecraft, Dresden Files, Percy Jackson, Ready Player One, Ready Player Two, Mansfield Park, Faulkner, In Cold Blood, Forget the Alamo,
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Prepared, knowledgeable, descriptive
How Todd runs games
I am the kind of DM that likes to craft the experience for my players in character creation and session 0. Then I take the players feedback on what kind of adventure they want. Whichever genre of story they choose, i.e. romantic, satiric, gothic, perilous. Usually, players just like a little bit of everything. And I enjoy becoming engrossed as a DM telling a story that I loose myself to the characters and villains that battle over the fates of eternity.

I once ran a session...
For a homebrew steampunk campaign with a Bard/Sorcerer BBEG that is designed as a musical approach at helping beginners conceptualize turn length.
I prep by
Giving myself "guiderail" quests the adventurers have options to pursue. I.e. setting up "if this, then that" scenarios that have planned events. Or by thoroughly reading the module I'll be running and planning accordingly.
My games focus on...
Role-playing and creativity rewards. I like rewarding players for excellent role-playing by offering XP or inspiration rewards based on interactions.
Todd's ideal table
Relaxed group that is able to treat sessions as a "safe space" for the events of the campaign to occur.

I love it when a player
When a player is capable of stopping my initial plans cold. Because it forces me as a DM to adapt quickly into a alternative workaround. No better practice than thinking on your feet.
I think it's a red flag when players...
First action in game is to try and pick up a barmaid or sleep with an NPC immediately. While all fun and games, to make that a primary focus signals larger SH or SA issues that can just be avoided.
I think min/maxing...
Is fine, though it sets up a typical hack n slash campaign that newer DMs aren't as capable of adjusting to, leaving either the campaign too easy, or impossible.
