About Sean | Throck's Tavern

Guys, gals, and non-binary pals welcome! I'm Sean and this is my tavern. Join me for a pint of your favorite liquid refreshment and let's roll some dice together! All are welcome to safely be themselves at my purposefully inclusive tables. I've been playing and running games since the late 80's or early 90's (it's fuzzy back that far!) And have run everything from intimate table games, to con games, to 100+ person Vampire LARP's. The whole time doing my best to make the games about my players and their stories. I have over 5000 hours running games in Roll20 and spent 4 years streaming multiple weekly games. This gives me a strong understanding of how to bring you an immersive experience using super cool tools. I'm a fool for sound, setting and theme so I work with high quality maps including from Czepeku's amazing collection, bespoke soundscapes using Bardic Tools & KenkuFM, and of course, leveraging all the bells and whistles Foundry & Roll20 have to offer. So join me, if you will, and let's tell a tale around the table together.

I became a GM because

I love collaborative storytelling! Working with a table of awesome creative folks to make something uniquely ours is never boring.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Warhammer Fantasy, gotta have the grim dark D&D 5e, because it's the one we all play Blades in the Dark, because it rules

My favorite books are

Joe Abercrombie's world of grim dark novels The original Dune novels Everything Tolkien The Expanse novels Batman: Court of Owls and the Killing Joke The Invisibles Saga.

How Sean | Throck's Tavern runs games

-I'm a role player at heart and so love to ensure we get some meaty drama along side the thrills of combat. -I work to build my combats so there's always a second way out if you can figure out how find it. -I tend not to pull my punches and roll openly to allow the game to feel fair and have real stakes - adventuring life might be heroic and profitable, but it's also incredibly dangerous! -I incorporate very minor and limited home rules, mostly around stealth, group tests, and persuasion. -I don't run evil aligned tables, but I love the grim dark and am willing to lean into the complex and morally grey. -But I also love to lean into the whimsy and fantastic to balance out darker things because without contrast the dark is dreary and the light is boring. -I tend to be PG13 in my narration and stay away from more intense themes (I'm not your guy for an authentic Curse of Strahd experience for example). -I like to use module remixes to extend and personalize marquee published campaigns (like Dragon Heist) to ensure a full satisfying narrative experience. -Safety tools exist for a reason and I use them religiously. My table must be a place where you feel safe to have fun and let go of the world outside, even if only for a few hours, if I've failed at that I've failed as a GM.

I deal with rules issues by...

Quickly solving at the table. If that's not possible make a ruling that doesn't disrupt the flow of the game and commit to coming back, after game, to get a solid understanding between me and the player. Though, if it's a life or character death issue, I always side with the players interpretation

Rules are...

Important to build drama and ensure fairness. Let the dice roll where they may! I will make occasional minor tweaks to things like stealth if I don't feel they serve our game. But always with clearly written precedent and in the spirit of the rules.

When it comes to voices

I love doing voices! I do broadcasting and commercial voice over work and never get to do the voice acting side. I need to let my inner goblin out, so it's coming out!

Sean | Throck's Tavern's ideal table

First, my tables are safe spaces for LGBTQAI+ and POC folks, hate has no place in RPGs. They are also a collaborative space where we tell a story and build a world together. We're here for fun, drama, and adventure and that happens when the player feels meaningfully connected to the world. Sure, I'll run modules, but we'll remix them together to get you to the center of the story because I'm not here to write a novel, I'm here to make sure you and the party are having a blast.

I am for a vibe that's...

is both fun loving while respecting the game. That means the fun centers on the table and our characters when it's time to play.

I love it when a player

leans into their character and grabs the spotlight, but is willing to step back and let others step in to that spotlight as well.

I think min/maxing...

is generally fine? Some people's role is the strong silent type who just wants to stab good. I like a player who leaves optimization behind to create a rounded out character. But I understand sometimes you just gotta stab good.
