About The Dez Witch

Hello Adventurers! My name is Dez and I'll be your guide through the realms of mystery, intrigue, and battle. I specialize in immersive settings and heavy role play with splashes of combat. I've been playing TTRPGs since 2004 and I've been DMing since 2013. I've DM'd campaigns like Curse of Strahd, Waterdeep Dragon Heist, and Waterdeep Dungeon of the Mad Mage. I've been considering running games professionally since storytelling is one of my great passions. I have streamed games before and enjoy the art of Cosplay and LARP.

My favorite books are

Lord of the Rings, Star Wars Novels, Forgotten Realms novels, Secrets of the Immortal Nicolas Flammel, Clive Cussler Novels, Temeraire books by Naomi Novik, and many more.

My favorite system of all Time is

World of Darkness. Hands down. Vampire the Masquerade, 20th Anniversary Edition. This probably makes me a nerd.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Making costumes for renaissance fairs and LARPs. It's a bit of a side business.

How The Dez Witch runs games

I am super role play heavy with immersive settings and diverse characters with fun and unique voices.

I deal with rules issues by...

Polling the players and to decide on a ruling. The party must also agree that whatever they decide as a group, within reason, that the enemies will be able to use the same rules against them.

I prep by

I crank up some inspiring music and look up thematic artwork online. Then I sit down and write the session and make the maps by hand. If I'm feeling really spicy, then I'll make a cup of Earl Gray.

My games focus on...

Characters and role play. The characters are the heroes and as such they should be given every opportunity to shine.

The Dez Witch's ideal table

My ideal table is a group of players that can balance being serious with small humorous beats. It shouldn't be a table of people just joking around. Humor has it's place, but there are times where a player should know that humor shouldn't happen, and that they have the prescience to know when that is. That said, we are here to have fun and if you want to tell the king that off color joke, but if you are attending the state funeral for his wife, please ask the bard to - just don't.

I love it when a player

Finds the perfect way to figure out the solution to a situation that's clever and not what I expected for the encounter.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Go out of their way to over explain something questionable and justify it as "what their character would do". I don't need to hear how your paladin takes grotesque trophies from all the enemies they've killed.

I think min/maxing...

Has it's place. It's place isn't at my table. Sure I love a character with a strong suit and a weakness, but please no. Make the weaknesses narrative and I will mess with the characters in a glorious way. It's way more fun than a min/max character.
