About That Mage
Hello! I am That Mage or Mage for short. I have been a dungeon master for close to 13 years playing mostly 3.5 and 5e. I have a lot of practice DMing for all kinds of parties, stories, settings and more. I love giving players creative freedoms and making their stories, decisions and impact on the game and the world feel important. I have my own style of DMing but I am super flexible and can accommodate for almost anything.

I became a GM because
No one else I knew at the time really wanted to be a GM. Once I started running games, I discovered a drive to give players an incredible experience. I wanted everything they did to feel special and bring their characters and their goals to life. I have the most fun when I my players have fun.
My favorite books are
The revenge of the shadow king/grey griffin series. I grew up reading those books and they inspired a lot of my creativity into my teenage years and I still hold them near and dear to my heart.
When I'm not running games I'm...
I’m often playing video games or trading card games, working on other creative projects, consuming creative content like twitch streams, YouTube videos, blogs or reading books. My mind is constantly racing to be creative and solve problems or puzzles.
How That Mage runs games
I love everything! I love RP as much as I love Combat! I love long story driven campaigns as much west marches and one shots. I am passionate and my preferences are that everyone has a great time. I've run everything from low magic dark fantasy to steam punk wild west. I am flexible and can and will run everything.

I prep by
Gauging player interests at the end of every session. I ask them what their plans and goals are for the next session so that I can make sure we have a smooth running game session to session. I will usually toss them a few plot hooks to chase or expand on anything they are interested in.
My games focus on...
Player agency and player driven story beats. I really enjoy making a player feel important and relevant to the worlds I put them in. I’ve run campaigns focusing on home town hero’s all the way to world ending threats, from faceless underdogs to infamous rebels. I love when my players have agency.
Rules are...
I typically like to have all my campaigns run on D&D 5e and I prefer to have all my players close in stats and power levels and I also want them to have the best chance of surviving. I typically start my campaigns at level 3 and have their stats be the point buy system and they Max HP until level 3.
That Mage's ideal table
I love a mixture of role playing and combat. I don’t really enjoy dungeon grinding I like for a players to come alive and have the ability to affect the greater world through their efforts. My ideal party and players would be: A group of 4-6 players with complex characters who each have wishes and goals and can come together to work towards those wishes and goals, even if their characters sometimes disagree, that could be part of the fun. Players that are invested in one another as well as being invested in the world and story they get to affect.

I am for a vibe that's...
Expressive, expansive, story and player driven. I want my games to feel exciting, filled with discovery and adventure. I want every moment to feel like it’s adding something to the characters or the world. I want it to feel real and meaningful and make you want to invest your time and energy into it
I think metagaming...
Ruins a lot of authenticity and belief. I love when players get to feel surprised and get a rush of excitement when faced with the unknown. I will typically ask players how their characters might know something about a creature if they start to try and abuse its weaknesses or know something about it
My table is not the place for...
For any inappropriate or insensitive behavior. My table is not a place to express unethical immoral evil behavior. I’m all for realism and some stigmas written into the lore of the game. But I don’t stand for senseless evil actions and insensitive behavior.
