About Nancy

Telling stories since I was a kid with a tape recorder in my mom's closet (good acoustics). I like to learn systems and help people actually have fun with the game they are playing! And maps. I LOVE MAPS. If you want someone who's as invested in telling a good story as getting rules right and who leans to humor instead of horror, I'm your middle-aged nerd.

I got started GMing...

Because a friend was nice enough to add me to a game for new players he was running. It was delightful, and also, I noticed so many opportunities missed to make the game even more immersive and memorable. Still, I enjoyed it so much that I gathered my writerly friends from fandoms started a game.

My favorite shows/movies are

Dimension 20 - like many on this site, I'm here bc Brennan said it was ok to try out. His emotional depth and having mechanics serve the story is what I strive for, his silliness is where I start. Others: Pacific Rim, Edge of Tomorrow, LOTR, Pride & Prejudice, Still Star-Crossed, new Star Trek tv

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Actual responses when I asked some of my players! "Flexible. Patient. Inventive." "Creative. Welcoming. Clever." "Imaginative. Flexible. Dedicated."

How Nancy runs games

You won't get many voices, but I am a map and NPC fiend. Love to roleplay and find where people are comfortable - but know how to build the game to what you want as a group. I require people be kind to each other, communicate their wants/needs, and have fun. Other than that - I've found a note-taker and a lore-keeper are good backups and keep players engaged and aware of what they think is happening.

I deal with rules issues by...

figuring out what we are really talking about - "fair" or "fun". I'm fine to be caught out - it happens to the best of us - but am not interested in using the rules to ruin someone's game. If someone is constantly pushing, I'm more likely to push back/be strict. Not here for gotcha on new players.

When it comes to voices

they'll come and go. I'm far too ADHD to hang onto them for a long time, but I love to try. I'm usually going for distinctiveness or a laugh.

Nancy's ideal table

I am a silly person who enjoys those willing to have both humor and chaos at the table. But the main thing I look for in a table is people who can work well with each other. I can run a crunchy, combat focused game or a RP only (see Agon or Stewpot) happily, as long as the table agrees on the focus. Bring generosity toward me and your fellow players and we're good.

I love it when a player

...does a crazy long backstory ...does no backstory but is happy to improv ...helps other players with rules gently ...does homework/reading when they don't understand ...asks for help without reading ...builds a story to support the characters around them ...engages with an NPC ...gets excited

My table is not the place for...

edgy takes or playing with prejudice in fantasy. That stuff requires a lot of careful consent up front, and a lot of trust. Also not here for the lone wolf character that doesn't want to be there. Guys. You gotta want to be there.
