About Ashley

Hi there! My name is Ashley, also known as SpunMagick, or Magi. I am a 40-something avid roleplayer with 27 years of experience in building realms, collaborative storytelling, and character development. I have 20 years of experience as a Game and Lore master, building worlds for my friends to explore, and plots for them to render unmade! In my free time I am also an artist/illustrator, DJ, and costume maker! I love diving into the intricate details of what makes something a particular style, or silhouette, and I apply these things I learn from my sewing exploits and social/crowd work to my D&D sessions! From a storytelling standpoint, I love immersing my players in cinematic descriptions and character-driven plot. I get to know my players as well as their characters, and their backstories, to use in the over-arching plot. We will discuss together, what is and isn't of interest for your character's development and where you would like to see your character go, overall. Building on the lore means each session, for each player is a meaningful, fulfilling interaction. Everyone has a spotlight as we build together a story that will stick with us for years to come. Dungeons and Dragons and many other TTRPGs is meant to be a safe space. Those of us who happen to be neurospicy, queer, or even just curious, have an entire realm in which we can either choose to be utterly ourselves with a sprinkling of magic, or something and someone entirely new. All are welcome, and all are safe.

People are always surprised when I tell them

I studied vocal performance with full intention to sing Opera. I can sing in 7 languages pretty well and very badly in 3 more.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Djing, spending time with my family, and writing music!

How Ashley runs games

For my game style, I need to preface with the fact that I looooove role play. I love to see it. The more you roleplay, the more your characters interact and bond, the more I have to work with overall in the setting of the campaign. That said, I have a penchant for dramatic, high-stakes scenes. I encourage character development, and absolutely love giving my players options that result in moral consequence. My players will know after session 0 that I need their history, so it can be written into the lore of the realm we're in. Regardless of which campaign we run, or what the end result should be, I customize the realm for my players. Just like any DM would adjust combat based on their player's abilities, perhaps to give them a little more or less of a challenge, I do the same with the overarching lore and build a story around the characters present.

I prep by

For me, prep involves not only understanding what I want to describe for a backdrop, theatre of the mind and maps that follow, but also should the scene call for it, prepping my players with little tidbits. I also double check my notes. The game never 'ends' for me.

My games focus on...

Character development. I want roleplay, I want history, and I want you to feel the consequences of your actions. I also understand that it's more than the lore built pre-game that really defines what character development is to a person.

Rules are...

Rules are a baseline. A guide. A how-to for to get you started and a box to build around for creatives.

Ashley's ideal table

My ideal table is comprised of people who love to build community with the others at their table. Willing to talk, eager to Roleplay, and tell a story with their new companions. People who are creative, enjoy puzzles, and challenges, and allow the spotlight to shift to others from time to time. Respectful, kind, and compassionate players do best at my table.

I love it when a player

Makes me laugh out loud. I can't do the stoic faced GM thing, and I don't know anyone who can. You make me laugh, chances are I'm going to give you something special.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Give the typical.. orphan/lone wolf/character that can't speak to any other characters. Like, what?
