About Spencer Quimby

Hi there! My name is Spencer Quimby and I have been DM'ing ongoing and one-shot campaigns for about four years now. I started out as a player with one of the best Dungeon Masters ever (just for me personally), and once they weren't able to DM anymore I started my own campaign. Most of my experience is in Homebrew campaigns and one-shots, but I have also dabbled in pre-written campaigns as well as forgotten realms campaigns. I love the unique art of Dungeons and Dragons storytelling and how it allows me to build new worlds and let people step into my creation and build it with me. Everyone has a seat at my table no matter who you are or where you came from, and I'll be damned if we don't have a great time. I live in Eugene, Oregon with my wonderful wife and my dog Biscuit, who sometimes likes to participate in my campaigns as well.

I got started GMing...

Because building worlds is fun, but building worlds with your friends is an experience unlike any other.

My favorite books are

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, I Hate Fairyland by Skottie Young, and Starhenge by Liam Sharp

When I'm not running games I'm...

Camping, hanging out with my dog, playing video games, or more likely working on my long list of projects for my house.

How Spencer Quimby runs games

I craft balanced campaigns that contain complex combat situations, intricate puzzles and dungeons, and that encourage roleplay between players. I also construct my campaigns and align my DM style to meet players where they are at, I tend to play with a lot of people that are new to the world of tabletop roleplaying so I make an effort to make sure they are comfortable but also have plenty of fun engaging with the campaign and other players.

I deal with rules issues by...

Interpretation. I stick as close to Rules as Written as I can, and as long as those rules make sense for the story we're telling. If a rule doesn't fit, then out the window it goes.

I prep by

Breaking the larger campaign into segments and applying the previous session's results to make any necessary adjustments to the next section of the campaign. Unless it's a one-shot, in which case I just get it as ready to go as I can.

When it comes to voices

I will try my best, and I think I do alright for myself. I have some close friends who are voice actors so I model my approach after them as much as I can!

Spencer Quimby's ideal table

My table is one where all are welcome. I strive to create a fun and engaging environment for everyone, and I appreciate players that buy into that mentality as well. My general table vibe is relaxed, but I like to get people excited about the game and the story they are taking part in. I also think that the players that will do best at my table are those who encourage and help each other and help to create a positive environment for those around them.

I love it when a player

Compliments another player on an action they've taken in the game, or encourages other players at the table. The players are a team, and so working together and encouraging one another can go a long way, especially for new players that are trying to get comfortable with role-playing or mechanics.

I think metagaming...

Takes players and their party out of the realm of storytelling. There will often be circumstances where players know more than their character knows, but living within the confines of the game will create a better environment for telling a good story and helping others stay engaged.

I think min/maxing...

Is a great way to challenge a GM. I love when players Min/Max to try and get one over on me because it forces me as the GM to think outside the confines of what I had written or was anticipating.
