About Somewhat Cyclops
I love creating fun worlds for the characters to explore, working with players to understand their characters more. I try to create a space that is full of fun and adventure and mystery- and sometimes even healing. 5e has an incredible rule set that can be used to explore new worlds or ideas inspired by favorite stories and myths. I run games that are LGBTQ and BIPOC welcoming and inclusive.

I got started GMing...
because I love world-building and character-exploring! It also made sense as my favorite role in a party was cleric - I'm always doing game support (or enabling!).
My favorite shows/movies are
Hundreds of Beavers. Star Trek. Twin Peaks. The Twilight Zone. Severance. O Brother Where Art Thou. The Office. Golden Girls. Eraserhead. The Terror. Succession. My Dinner With Andre. True Detective. Alien. Mulholland Drive. The Expanse. The Orville. Fargo. Beau is Afraid. Death to Smoochy. Columbo.
When I'm not running games I'm...
writing. Sometimes I write about my textile witchery, since I spin, knit, crochet, weave, dye, and sew. I also have two darling dogs, and plot the solarpunk revolution. Watching Columbo.
How Somewhat Cyclops runs games
I enjoy roleplay, combat and dungeon dives, magical storylines that intersect with modern sensibilities. I like creating combat situations that ask for a bit more than just hack and slash - but I've run plenty of meat grinders as well, and will adjust my GM style to the players at the table. The most fundamental part of TTRPGS for me is the collaboration with the players - I enjoy that process, and crafting a world with the players. it's a delight to discover ways to make the mechanics of the game fit the stories we want to tell, and the experiences the players have. If I don't say yes and, it's probably no but...

I deal with rules issues by...
I often have the rules at my fingertips (many GM's do), but in the moment it may be hard to find! If it's taking too much time I talk through my logic on the call I'm making, and will follow up with the party when I clarify the rule after game when some time and thought can be dedicated to it.
I prep by
I review character sheets and goals and my prior session's notes, and make sure I have a good grasp of where things are headed. I'm not a railroader. which means I often have to overprepare if the party is at a big crossroads!
Rules are...
important to maintain balance and the sense of fairness and justice in the game. That said, making sure that characters have big moments that are appropriate to their class and the adventures they are striving for is also important.
Somewhat Cyclops's ideal table
Players who want to explore who their characters are and how they fit into their world, who are seeking a supportive and relaxed, casual vibe. One of the most important things I return to is that it is a game, and in addition to being challenging it should also be fun. That doesn't mean that it can't have serious or heartfelt moments, but that we are all here to enjoy time together, and build amazing stories for our characters to pass down . . .

I love it when a player
does something that's so completely in-character and yet surprising. It's amazing to see where players take their characters, and it's always a delight to see when someone hits that roleplay just right.
I think metagaming...
can be helpful in small doses to make sure everyone is on the same page and ok with what may be going on, or need more information to understand the decision their character is about to make.
