About Simple Fox

I started with tabletop wargames, playing Warhammer 40k and other tactical games when I was in elementary school. I was introduced to Dungeons and Dragons during high school and then served in the United States Marine Corps as a computer admin for 5 years before getting my bachelor's degree in game design. In all that time I've developed 25 years of tabletop gaming experience and 10 years of professional game development experience. I love seeing worlds, systems, and characters grow into more amazing and complex forms than what they started as. I have explored hundreds of different rulesets and enjoy the inspiration third party content brings to the table.

People are always surprised when I tell them

People are always surprised when I tell them that as a game designer, I'm often more interested in how players find creative ways to flex the rules for fun than how they perfectly follow them.

When I'm not running games, I'm often immersed in game design theory, exploring new TTRPG systems, or delving into hard-science fiction and gritty fantasy for new world-building inspiration.

How Simple Fox runs games

Fun above all. I vibe on system depth. I'm a GM who designs enthralling worlds, enables incredible character development, and utilizes every tactic in combat. As a game dev I've dedicated my life to game design and love when players bring in their own ideas and third party content as I work to fit it all into a meaningful plot. Being skilled at art, design, programming, and writing, I try not to focus on any one aspect of the game. Each part is important to the whole in creating a fun and inviting world to experience. I bring life to my characters through descriptors and mannerisms more than trying to emulate their voice and emotions myself. I love bringing player ideas into the mix. Homebrew, 3rd party content, or just a thought that needs more development. I'm always available on discord and open to off-hour conversation.

My favorite trope is...

My favorite trope is the 'gritty survival in a vast, uncaring universe' or 'magic that functions as a branch of science.' I love exploring desperate struggles against overwhelming odds, where clever tactics and resourcefulness are paramount.

Rules are...

Rules are crucial for a consistent and challenging game, but they're also tools to be wielded with creativity. I enjoy finding ways to bend or adapt them to fit unique player ideas or narrative twists, ensuring the game remains balanced and thematic. Rules should never get in the way of having fun.

When it comes to voices

When it comes to voices, my focus is on descriptive language, mannerisms, and a character's unique approach to conversation. Rather than attempting a wide range of vocal impersonations, I aim to convey personality and intent through narrative detail, allowing the players to interpret and engage with

Simple Fox's ideal table

My table is a laid-back and strategically engaging environment where cooperation and creativity flourish, and every participant feels comfortable contributing. It's a place where tactical possibilities are thoroughly explored and clever use of abilities in challenging combat and smart play over pure optimization is deeply appreciated. I use rules as a flexible framework, enhancing fun and accommodating unique ideas while maintaining balance and thematic consistency is my intention. I allow custom content, aiming to seamlessly integrate inventive concepts. Ultimately, this table prioritizes fun above all; if a rule hinders that, solutions are found to bring new ideas in a balanced and thematic manner, because a rule has no point if it ruins the fun.

I am for a vibe that's laid-back and strategically engaging, where cooperation and creativity flourish, and the ultimate goal is always to have fun. We take the game seriously, but never ourselves.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

If you're into deep tactical combat, gritty fantasy, science, desperate survival, and long campaigns with friends, you're going to love my table.

I think min/maxing...

I think min/maxing is acceptable if it enhances a character's concept and the overall tactical play. My preference is for players who focus on making the best tactical use of their character within the world's theme, rather than pure numerical optimization.
