About ScoTTRPG

Hi! My name is Scott. As with so many groups, I was the guy who got my friends into D&D 5E back in 2017 by offering to learn how to DM, and I've been doing it since. I've run several long form campaigns for multiple groups as well as various one-shots, both in-person and online. I've even convinced several of the group to take up the mantle a few times and become something of a mentor in regards to being a DM. I believe teaching the game is one of my greatest strengths, and I love showing new players how much fun roleplaying games can be. I am what I call a "rules are cool" type of DM, meaning I try to find a line between strict RAW and rule of cool, always looking for ways to use the rules to do whatever cool, imaginative thing my players have come up with. I prefer running published modules and campaigns and adding my own twists to them to creating my own world from scratch. One thing I make an extra effort on is finding ways to create side stories based on the backstories of my PCs. I've found that my players greatly enjoy having their own personal touch on the campaign's plot. I also enjoy fostering my player's creativity and am more than willing to let them derail a campaign and explore things from there. Some of the best stories from my adventures have come when things deviate from the path. I'd love to run a game for you. If I sound like a good fit for you, but my current listings don't work, feel free to send me a message and maybe we can work something out!

I got started GMing...

because I really wanted to get into D&D with my friends but none of us knew a DM, so I took up the mantle myself.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

flexible, knowledgeable, and encouraging.

When I'm not running games I'm...

learning guitar, playing games, or playing with my pets.

How ScoTTRPG runs games

I make every effort to tailor my style to the desires of my players. That being said, I approach the game in general as follows: When it comes to roleplaying, I treat NPCs as if they were living, breathing creatures with their own motivations and histories. They don't simply exist as vending machines for plot hooks. Treating them poorly tends to have negative in-game consequences, and treating them well does the opposite. The world, in a general sense, does not revolve around the players, meaning events can and will happen "off-screen" so to speak, and can impact the plot. My main goal is to make sure that the world progresses in a logical and organic way based on the decisions made and actions taken by the PCs and the NPC responses to them. My goal with combat is to be engaging. Sometimes that comes from challenge, others from story impact. The main thing I try to avoid is for combat to be a repetitive slog. I try to play enemies in a manner that suits them, whether that's a mindless beast simply attacking whatever hurts it or a gang of wily goblins using ambush tactics and traps. I am also more than willing to allow PCs to find clever ways to avoid combat should they so choose. All that being said, I find I am at my best when leaning into the silly and over-the-top. The most memorable moments from my campaigns tend to be some wacky NPC that the players instantly love, and even in the grittiest of settings I find ways to inject a bit of levity. All in all, my main goal as a DM is to facilitate the crafting of an epic collaborative story with my players and allowing them to flex their creative muscles to have fun while doing it.

Rules are...

the framework within which we play, and when used creatively can allow players to do almost anything they can think of. They aren't perfect, though, and usually need some adjusting here and there.

When it comes to voices

I try my best, but it's a work in progress.

ScoTTRPG's ideal table

I look for creative, active, and engaged players at my table. I want to create a fun environment, whether the tone of the scene is upbeat and silly or dark and serious. I find players that invest in their characters, the party, and the game world enjoy the games more and I have more to offer to them during play.

I am for a vibe that's...

fun, engaged, and collaborative. Parties that work together to ensure everyone's enjoyment are the most rewarding in my opinion.

I love it when a player

surprises me, especially if it throws a wrench in whatever I had planned. Catching me off guard with a zany idea or obscure mechanic has led to some of the more memorable moments at my tables.

I think it's a red flag when players...

try to backseat game other players. There's no such thing as "optimal gaming," even if it might seem like there is. A player's character is theirs to pilot, unless they ask for input, leave it to them.
