About SG Winter

I have been in love with telling stories for as long as I can remember. I'm an avid devourer of books, actual-play content, and home games with fellow GMs, and I blend all those experiences together to create vivid, immersive worlds in which you can splash around. My worlds and games are designed to elevate the stories of the characters who enter them, whether through RP or personal interaction with lore. I am a firm believer that everyone's story matters, and I am excited to provide space for you to explore yours.

How SG Winter runs games

Wait! Why are we fighting this monster, again? Combat is fun and exciting, but it has to make sense. My sessions open with roleplay and allow the characters to pursue the plot however they see fit: by scheming their way around the traps and baddies in their way, by fighting through the horde, or by talking themselves out of trouble. I'll provide the framework and plot; what you do with them is up to you.

I deal with rules issues by...

...consulting the written text. When that takes too long or doesn't fit the situation, I make a decision for the current session and research the issue later, updating table rules to reflect either the text or what works best for that party.

I once ran a session...

...without any rules! We rolled whatever dice we wanted whenever we felt like it. Someone played a sentient coat rack; someone else played a grandma. We laughed. We cried. We defeated a skeleton army in the nick of time. It was incredible and I can't wait to do it again.

SG Winter's ideal table

My players are incredible. Whether you're silly, thoughtful, or simply intent on stabbing evil, you are full of heart and boundless creativity. Every table is different, yet your creative use of abilities, information, and charisma always blows me away. Your deep love for your characters impresses me, and your love for others in your party inspires me. When you play at my table, we put the "collaborative" in "collaborative storytelling", and we're all better for it. Looking for a GM who loves your character? Hello, that's me. Looking for a party that loves them, too? Sit down and relax. You are definitely in the right place.

I love it when a player

...surprises me. When you think outside of the box—whether through unconventional spell use or by using your surroundings to your advantage—it's the highlight of my night. I am shocked and delighted by creativity in all its forms.

I think metagaming...

...is why Easter eggs exist! It's for cool lore moments that excite the players and GM even if the characters don't yet realize their significance. If you put two and two together early, please let others enjoy the puzzle. Metagaming simply to gain an advantage is grounds for expulsion.

I think min/maxing...

...has its uses and is a valid way to play. It also works best if the whole party is playing that way. If you love min/maxing, you are welcome at my table. Please note, however, that most of my players avoid it. We'll offer advice when it's requested, but for the most part we aren't experts.
