About Ryoko

Hello! My name is Ryoko, I'm a DM of just over two years, with one finished campaign under my belt. I want to get a lot more experience running D&D, and as many DMs probably do, I aspire to reach the lofty heights of the likes of Brennan Lee Mulligan in my ability to stun the party with an improvised villainous monologue! I derive great energy and excitement from working with players to create a world that is engaging for them, and for myself. I also won't hold back; if you give me the freedom to I will do horrible things to motivate your characters.. And as a fun bit of extra interactivity, I use a 2D VTuber model! All of my games are inclusive, and I have a zero-tolerance policy for bigotry of any kind. My games are an LGBTQ+ safe space, and pronouns are to be respected at all times.

I became a GM because

I love to tell stories that my players genuinely feel connection with. When they come to me with ideas and trust me to make something out of them, that means so much to me. When something I do in a game makes a player laugh, or cry, or rage at an NPC, I feel fulfilled.

I got started GMing...

When I walked into a local gaming store, got chatting with the owner (I'm one of those weirdos that strikes up an hour-long conversation with a stranger) and saw they needed a DM for Wednesday D&D at their store. I had never played or DM'd before, said I could do it, went and bought the books!

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Having just asked two of my players, here's what they said. - Intense - Fun - Creative As a bonus, one of them could only think of "scary" right off the bat, which I take as a compliment!

How Ryoko runs games

I am a roleplay heavy DM, and I tend to create encounters via roleplay rather than combat. This does mean that combat is rare in my games, but when it does happen it tends to be very big and impactful. To facilitate this style, I do a lot of voices and different accents, and I'm always focused on the individual stories that all come together to create the overarching narrative that push the players along down whatever path they choose!

My favorite trope is...

The antithesis to the tortured immortal; the optimistic immortal! One that, no matter what hardships they go through, still loves life and how much of it they get to live. The tortured immortal is a cool trope too but it can be so depressing, focusing on only the negatives.

My games focus on...

Roleplay and story! The last campaign I ran had very few combat sessions, which only happened when they had story impact. I don't tend to like random encounters or running my games like they're an MMO and you have to clear out all the trash before getting to the boss.

Rules are...

Suggestions! I generally try to go by the rules, but rule of cool is the absolute rule. If you describe something that doesn't work the way the spell is worded but it's cool? Hell yeah!

Ryoko's ideal table

My tables always end up being a mix between comedy and sudden seriousness. I really like that dichotomy too; when everyone is laughing and having a good time at the start of the session, but then sighing heavily and laughing nervously at the end? I feel like I've done a good job. I tend to tell stories that are pretty intense, and deal with some darker themes. I'm trying to counteract that by telling stories that are more cozy, and only shift into darker themes on occasion. For this reason I'm a big fan of Obojima, because that setting facilitates that exact shift!

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Deep roleplay. I like to describe myself as a DM aspiring to be on the same level as Brennan Lee Mulligan, but without as much combat. For those that watch Dimension 20, you know combat is already relatively rare for their games!

I love it when a player

Gives me tons of open-ended threads to play with, as well as themes they want me to touch on with those threads! Nothing gets me happier than when a player is surprised by where I take one of those threads, and loves it even more than what they originally thought of!

I think it's a red flag when players...

Refuse to provide pronouns of any kind. I'm of the mind that no matter what, politics is in everything we do, and especially in this day and age, the refusal to give pronouns is a huge red flag for me, that often means there's bigotry waiting to come to the surface. There are exceptions, of course.
