About RiskyDice

Hi, I’m Will. A UK-based GM. I’ve been running TTRPGs for the past few years with friends, with a particular focus on Dungeons & Dragons. My games blend tactical combat and meaningful player choices, with plenty of room for humour and memorable character moments along the way. By day, I work in tech, and I use that background to create polished online sessions using Foundry VTT, atmospheric audio, and a range of self-hosted tools designed to keep games immersive and running smoothly. I primarily run published adventures, but I treat them as frameworks rather than rigid scripts. I adapt encounters, NPCs, and story details around the party while keeping the campaign coherent and recognisable. My aim is to provide a welcoming, reliable table where players can invest in their characters and help shape the story.

I started running games because...

I started playing TTRPGs during the COVID lockdowns. Sharing adventures with others for a few hours a week had a genuinely positive impact on my mental health. When I later struggled to find a regular group, I decided to start one myself and found I loved being a game master more than being a player

My favorite books are

My current favourites are Mistborn Era One, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and One Piece. I try to bring similar themes into my games—from the chaotic energy of DCC and the adventure of One Piece to the twists and high stakes of Mistborn.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Outside of TTRPGs, I work as an Infrastructure Support Specialist, focusing on workplace technologies and cloud-based solutions. That technical background allows me to bring a range of digital tools into my games, all self-hosted on my own home servers.

How RiskyDice runs games

As a Game Master, I make sure that everybody has an opportunity to contribute to the roleplay and the story. I'm not a world class voice actor, but I try to use distinct mannerisms, descriptions and sound to keep things immersive. I like to make use of terrain, hazards and other interactive elements to make encounters feel varied instead of just a simple stand and fight routine.

My favorite trope is...

The character who has been dealt a bad hand of cards, but still manages to beat the odds. I love a story of growth, redemption and becoming better than you were before.

Rules are...

Rule are a framework. They are there to guide us and ensure we have a good time and I adhere to them consistently, but I'm willing to make adjustments when following them too strictly would get in the way of us having fun.

When it comes to voices

When it comes to reoccuring NPCs in a story, I try to have a distinct voice or mannerisms for them even if my range is limited. For one-off characters like a generic goblin they may share the same voice but I will always make it clear which character is speaking.

RiskyDice's ideal table

I love players who ask questions—not only of NPCs, but of each other. Seeing characters develop their own relationships, conflicts, and personal arcs alongside the main story creates some of the most memorable moments in TTRPGs.

I am for a vibe that's...

welcoming and relaxed. I encourage new players to join my tables and it is so important that everybody feels comfortable, included and part of the group.

I love it when a player

gets emotionally invested in the world. Whether it's getting enraged about the unjust actions of a villain, or getting fiercely protective over Boblin the Goblin, the NPC ally. That investment bring real stakes and creates the most memorable moments.

I think min/maxing...

can sometimes spoil the fun. I prefer characters built around strong concepts and personality first, and mechanics later. Weaknesses and setbacks can create some of the best stories.
