About Rain

I am a long time fan of RPGs and storytelling. I was an avid reader of fantasy and scifi and have read hundreds of incredible tales of different worlds and civilizations. I love the transformative power of stories and worlds to evoke potent emotions and immerse us into another universe. I got into TTPRGs through system-lite and systemless stories, then DnD 5e. Now I love experiencing new games and systems like CoC, Kids on Brooms, PF2e, and the Cosmere roleplaying game. Since I am also a massive Stormlight fan with a hyperfixation on anything Cosmere related, I love to run this awesome system and show players more about this incredible world. I GM'd DnD 5e quite a lot with one shots and campaigns and created and ran my own games for systems like CoC, Kids on Brooms and the Cosmere. An aspect of TTRPGs I feel is the most magical is the collaborative creation that it takes. I work with a few friends who are GMs and I love the aspects of building worlds, consulting and helping with world building, mechanics and characters and creating shared experiences. I also love doing it in games through improv, backstory creation and shared map making. For me, TTRPGs, are about sharing experiences, connection and love and that is what makes them so special to me.

I became a GM because

I love telling stories with my friends. The only thing I love more than experiencing a story is experiencing it with others. My goal is to make each player feel real emotions and have a great time.

My favorite books are

I love fantasy such as The Name of the Wind, Stormlight Archive, and Mistborn I also love sci fi such as Velocity Weapon, Star Wars EU, and This is How You Lose the Time War

How Rain runs games

My favorite games are roleplay and narrative focused. I love allowing players to live multiple lives and explore vast and dynamic worlds. I also appreciate when world building can be collaborative, whether that is through elaborate backstories, improvised details on the fly or collaborative mechanics in the games themselves, I always have fun customizing the game and world to my players. I follow rule systems with consistency (sometimes as a table we'll bend things or homebrew if everyone is alright with it) but I am dedicated to making each adventure special and my own. If you give me some information about what you love, or play with me for long enough, I will start to shape it around you as well. I love how two people can encounter the same world, but have vastly different experiences based on where they look and what they focus on. I am also dedicated to being inclusive and supportive of diversity and difference. I love big adventurers with huge world defining stakes, and also smaller scopes that focus on what it is to be a person. Check to make sure the adventure fits with what you are looking for.

I prep by

Building encounter maps on tabletop or roll20. We might need to do a theater of the mind, but I like dynamic environments that allow clever decisions and so some scenes might lead to maps I have built.

My games focus on...

player choices. I try to customize each game around the characters you bring, and allow for big choices and world defining decisions. Let me know what you are looking for in a game, and I can try to make sure it is accommodated. Sometimes, I add cute creatures for players I know will appreciate it.

Rules are...

up to the table. They are a great mechanic for us to feel the world is consistent and real. But if the table wants flanking or for crits to really matter, we make sure everyone knows from the start and that's the world now.

Rain's ideal table

Each game has it's own theme and I'll try to be clear what kind of game I will run (example: combat heavy vs combat optional). Players who want to act, play as a team, tell a story, just explore a world, and solve puzzles are all good fits at my table. Players who don't want to play with the party, don't care about story, character or big narrative choices, or metagame, should look at another table. I like to run a combination of comedy and seriousness. If you don't make jokes during a TTRPG session as player, is it really a session? That being said, it is important to have space for each player to have their moment which might be serious, if the story calls for it. I love helping players learn in one-shots, new players are encouraged to join to learn a system. In larger scale campaigns, I am interested in focusing on character building, deep emotional and party dynamics that will build over a long time. As much as possible, I like to customize every adventure to each player character in the game, allowing them to have dynamics that feature them.

I love it when a player

wants to world build, improv some new ideas, or create elaborate backstory as long as they are willing to work with me to make it all work. I love opportunities that center the player telling stories, or when I get to reveal amazing lore someone at the table created.

I think metagaming...

can be detrimental for other players who want to role play. I have systems in place to subvert expectations and try to keep surprise and secrets authentic for players and characters but let's try to play the game collaboratively to create a great story.

I think min/maxing...

should be a role play choice. I know some min/maxed people in real life, but there should be more than "this build is broken" and instead about "what would cause someone to be so singularly focused?", "how do their mins cause flaws and difficulties despite their skill?".
