About Proficient Pete

I've been GMing and playing D&D on and off for 12+ years, and I have always had a passion for all things TTRPG. When I was young, D&D got me through some of the hardest times in my life, and I know it can do the same for others! I want nothing more than to be a vessel in bringing that joy and happiness to others. Having run games for 4e, 5e, and 5.5e in theatre of the mind, VTT's, and with maps and minis, I've experienced the slew of changes to the core game, and am confident in delivering an inclusive and fun adventure to any table! I am in the works of publishing a full campaign setting, and am determined to spread the popularity of this amazing game to everyone willing to have some fun! And hey - who isn't? Format: For my typical session hosting, I use a voice chat over Discord, and utilize the online VTT on Owlbear Rodeo. This allows people from all around the world to come together no matter if it's by phone or PC. For my games, no account or experience is required, as I feel this opens up many options. Structure: Every one of my games is set up on a refined session 0 tool-kit that includes; outlined expectations, safety tools such as lines and veils (discussed one on one), & learning gameplay preferences to ensure everyone has a great time! LGBTQ+ friendly! Game Type & Schedule: My typical schedule for hosting games is best geared towards one-shots, but campaigns will open up in the future. We'll see how the cookie crumbles! I do not use generative AI for my games.

I ran my first game...

When I was 9 years old, my brother and I became enthralled by D&D. As the perfect respite from our chaotic childhoods, we would go back and forth DMing for each other. The feeling of nostalgia and belonging only grew over the years, and I strive to show others the great times that TTRPG's can offer.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Prepared, flexible, & creative. As with anything I do, I put in my all into presenting games that are fun for the players above all else. Whether that's making sure that the narrative never falls short, fluidly working with their schedules, or creating boundless opportunities in our sessions.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Typically either working on the campaign setting book I'm writing, hand-crafting one-shot modules, or studying D&D rulings/GM techniques! Through and through running games and crafting amazing stories with people is my biggest passion.

How Proficient Pete runs games

In a word: Epic! My games will always bring a refreshing narrative, and my GMing will fully immerse you in a session that blends our collaborative efforts into an amazing story that you will never forget. As a sliding scale, I lean usually more towards the rule of cool rather than rules-heavy, and believe that while most all core rules are important, at the end of the day they are meant to serve the story, not to restrict the players! I have always had a passion for storytelling, creative atmosphere, and all things TTRPG, and promise to bring that passion with me for every setting. I can assure that I'll be first to whip out the funny voices and get the ice breaking every time. During combats, nothing at my table lacks a cinematic touch. Oh you missed? More like, "You bring down your halberd, making contact with his bracer, but the lich's dragonscale armor is left without even so much as a scratch. Though you didn't draw blood, your blow undoubtedly drew his attention away from your downed caster! Roll that death save Jimmy!" I make sure to bring the heat for tactically-charged scenarios, keep things dynamic throughout, and ensure every encounter is meaningful! No randomly generated wolves here! Using an organized and simple format to gauge the types of expectations players have, I learn from the players what kinds of things are important above all else before we embark on our journey. LGBTQ+ friendly and player-first gameplay! I do not and never will use AI for my games!

I prep by

Listening to fitting music, browsing human-made art, and crafting a living breathing world that my players can experience with full and unlimited agency. Guaranteed potential around every bend is a must!

My games focus on...

Fun! Feel free to check your phone or grab a drink during the sessions, but please be responsible, attentive, and respectful of all players at the table!

Rules are...

Meant to serve the story and the players, not restrict them! However, with that said there is a reason we have them; giving structure to the game at large is important!

Proficient Pete's ideal table

My tables value the story's narrative, and immersing themselves into the unique worlds I bring to life. Those who feel like the rule of cool and fun are your top priorities are a great fit, but I know my way around the rulebooks as well. Want to mold earth into a landslide? Perfect. Want to expend all 3 charges on the chime of opening to crack open the boss's armor? Roll for it! I cultivate a welcoming atmosphere where people can be themselves, and negativity is never tolerated. Come as you are whether that's with no experience, as a seasoned veteran, or anywhere in between. I can guarantee a great adventure, hearty laughs, and lasting friendships. With no expectations to go outside of your comfort zone, I'll be the first to break the ice with NPC voices, in-character reactions, and fitting music too. My table is the perfect place to get into character, free of judgement, and have a great time!

I love it when a player

... comes up with creative solutions or really gets into character. I often award inspiration dice like trophies to players going above and beyond!

I think metagaming...

Beyond talking tactics above table, may give unrealistic expectations when going into my sessions. With edits to stat blocks & my own encounter balancing, not everything is the same old goblin! An old decrepit flumph might have less HP than you think, or an especially burly troll! Focus on fun!

My table is not the place for...

Anything hateful. Period. We're all adult humans living on the same earth - let's act like it folks!
