About Phoenix Rose
Hello! I am Phoenix, a 40-year-old GM with many years of experience in teaching games and role play. I specialise in teaching beginners how to play, making people feel engaged, comfortable and supported during a session, and have a particular interest in recruiting players who are queer, BIPOC, disabled, and/or neurodivergent (but this isn't a requirement - all are welcome!)

I started running games because...
I got tired of trying to find tables where women and queer people were welcome and ALSO represented in gameplay. Most campaigns have 90% male NPCs and so I frequently flip the narrative to make my whole world more inclusive - queer couples, female warriors, disabled magic users, I gotchu đ«¶
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Friendly, fun, and - on occasion - evil đđ
When I'm not running games I'm...
Hanging out with my two amazing kids, my cats, or feeding the local murder of crows. I also spend a lot of time writing (fantasy/dystopian fiction), reading, wild swimming and convincing my friends to go on road trips with me.
How Phoenix Rose runs games
Story-telling - I'm an educator and author, so story-telling is in my nature, and I endeavour to create worlds that feel alive and tangible to everybody at the table, whether that's wonder in the Feywilds or terror in Barovia. Newbie-friendly - D&D can be terrifying to beginners, and I've been told I'm the perfect DM for that. I hold a session zero (pre-campaign session) that walks you through the basics, helps you with character creation, and answers any questions you may have in a relaxed, friendly environment. Backstory - your backstory matters. It shapes the narrative, and I give the room for players to explore character development, have fulfilling, emotional moments, and discover friendship and found family along too. Voice acting - okay, so I may not have voice acted professionally, but I have told stories to (quite literally) thousands of children over the years and had them all hanging on every word, so I humbly suggest that my voices are (mostly) on point, and help to distuinguish between the wacky and wondrous characters you'll meet. Combat - not every interaction will end in combat, but when it does, combat is layered, with meaningful, high stakes and battles that require smarts, tactics and teamwork as well as brute force. Improv - although every session is prepped and planned for, I am always prepared to throw it all out and "yes, and -" the players' choices. We carve this story out together, and who am I to argue with the occasional sprinkle of chaos?

I deal with rules issues by...
Reading the Rules as Written (RaW). I NEVER mind being challenged by a player when it comes to the rules, even the most seasoned DM cannot hold every rule in their head all the time, so I welcome being questioned and I will always double-check a ruling before making the final call.
My games focus on...
Creating a world that is as informed by the players as it is by the DM, mixing poignant roleplay with tactical combat in a player-driven adventure that feels meaningful, tangible and urgent.
Rules are...
Simply a foundation for fair - and fun! - play. The rules are there as guidelines to help players do what they want to do, but I'm never opposed to 'Rule of Cool' - you never know until you try.
Phoenix Rose's ideal table
My tables are warm, welcoming, immersive and co-operative. My ideal player is someone who is engaged in the story, invested in their character, and understands that a character's weaknesses and flaws add to their play as much as their strengths and abilities. If you love Dimension 20 or Critical Role and want that level of engagement, you are in the right place, my friend! To play at my table, you don't need to do a voice or know the rules, you just need to care, and I can worry about the rest. I hope to see you at my table soon.

Dimension 20!
I love it when a player
Says âwhat I want to do is this⊠how can I do it?â That means I worry about the game mechanics, and you get to pull of the totally cool thing you want to do - so if youâre worrying you wonât know all the rules, donât panic! You tell me what you want to do, then I show you how!
I think it's a red flag when players...
Create a character who is a loner stereotype. I get the impulse. My own first D&D character was one, too. But if you stonewall others, you don't get to have conversations, connections; and even though the eventual arc may be satisfying, you'll feel left out and isolated as a player.
