About J

I'm a long-time gamer and educator. My full-time job is as a math teacher for adult learners seeking to earn their high school equivalency, and I also do some education research on the side. I've been a Dungeon Master for a number of groups playing 5th Edition D&D since January 2021. Overall, I DM because I like to put pieces on the table and see what the players do with them - for better or worse! I got started GMing...

Because I wanted to play D&D with cool people, and didn't know any other DMs at the time. The best way to get a group together is to start it yourself!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Professionally, I teach mathematics and conduct education research involving mathematics and games. Personally, I'm likely playing a video game (often a Bethesda game, lately a lot of Deltarune) or trying to get into a TTRPG campaign as a player.

How J runs games

I like to run games that combine modern and old-school styles to bring the best of both worlds. This means deadly dungeon crawls combined with complex social dynamics and villains running the spectrum of shades of gray. I use published adventures and modules from all editions of D&D and from both WotC/TSR and 3rd parties, and supplement with my own stuff plus whatever you bring to the table as players.

I once ran a session...

Where half my party created a poop golem illusion as a distraction and then ran away. The other half of the party proceeded to kill the final boss themselves.

I prep by

Reviewing the events of the previous session, identifying a handful of locations that the players might go in the next session, and making sure I know who (or what) is there (and why, and how...).

Rules are...

Important for setting up the plausibility of the world. They can and should be bent and interpreted liberally to create a more dramatic story.
