I got started GMing...
in college. Some other kids heard I had played before and wanted to learn. When we got started, all we had was one copy of the PHB and our imaginations.
My favorite books are
epic fantasy. If it has less than 600 pages or five books in the series then it had better have a really good pitch.
My favorite system of all Time is
maybe 2d20. It has a nice balance between rules and intent, and the setting adaptations feel natural to their source material.
How Jay Reeves runs games
I enjoy epic fantasy and running fate-of-the-world plot lines. I've run dialogue heavy moral quandaries, character driven problem solving and progression, and fast-paced crawls.

I once ran a session...
(Star Trek Adventures) where a vulcan officer's first encounter with the borg involved an incubation chamber. Their reaction: "I want to do that vulcan thing." "A nerve pinch?" "No, the other thing." "Oh, you mean a mind meld?" "Yeah!" "Ok; oh no..."
I prep by
going over what needs to be done, what I want to get done, what the players said they were going to get done, what happens if they don't, and just enough of something random if they turn around and go the other way.
Rules are...
like formal language. They're very structural and useful for the framework of communication; but once in a grey moon, you just need to sentence your words in a way that matches the drapes.

high stakes and high rewards
I love it when a player
becomes invested in their character's morals and desires, leading them to actively engage in their character's goals, instead of just reacting to the story.
I think min/maxing...
boring. My most interesting warlock never learned eldritch blast. The most memorable healer I've encountered was a Klingon Chief of Medicine who specialized in first aid and was a terrible surgeon.
