About Kayzar
What do you get when you take a theater major, who pivoted into a career teaching literature, add a dash of sarcasm and throw in a handful of movie quotes? A good bloody time at the table! I've been a forever GM for 11 years and have run professional tables for 3. I love to tell stories that deal with the themes of humanity, heroism, heartache (and yes, those are just the "h" words). Whether you are new to a system or you've been playing it for years I want you to come tell stories with me. I use my improvisational training and my knack for teaching to make sure everyone feels welcome and can have fun at my table. Diversity is the spice of life and you will have an ally in me! "If you're a pretender, come sit by the fire For we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in!" - Invitation, Shel Silverstein

I got started GMing...
by playing FATE Core. I thought it was a simpler system than D&D 3.5 but it turns out that just because a game is less crunchy, doesn't mean it's simpler! I learned a lot of my RP improvisational chops from throwing myself into the fire with that system. Going back to D&D 5e was easy by comparison.
My favorite books are
Too many to count... some top faves are Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Beloved by Toni Morrison, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and anything my Michael Crichton.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Dramatic, Welcoming, Knowledgeable
How Kayzar runs games
My tables are very roleplay heavy, I feel it's important to embody the NPCs so that you are immersed in the experience. Likewise combat is not super crunchy, but very tactical. The world you will exist in will have their own motives and goals in addition to interacting with you. My main goal is for your character to feel like they are connected to the world and that you feel empowered in the story we are building together.

I deal with rules issues by...
picking the best answer in the moment and ret-conning as needed. Hey, if Marvel can make up random loopholes to fix problems, so can we!
If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...
Steven Spielberg. Hands down.
Rules are...
...more like guidelines than actual rules. Rules are there to help everyone know how gravity in the world works. They are there to help everyone be on the same page and have fun. If a rule is stopping the fun for everyone, then it needs to be amended.
Kayzar's ideal table
I want a table with people from all different walks of life, a table of people that are together for the excitement of getting to play these awesome games, a table that is not about winning, but about playing a beautiful story. "The point is not to play as tight as you can. The point is to be bold. To be dangerous. Be elegant...Any man that's half awake can spot a trap that's laid out for him. But to stride in boldly with a plan to turn it on its ear, that is a marvelous thing." - I looked down at the board. "The point isn't to win?" - The point," Brendon said grandly, "is to play a beautiful game."

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table
Critical Role and Worlds Beyond Number are huge inspirations for me. No not just because they do funny accents, but their GMs work to make sure that their players have agency. I don't just do dungeon crawls (though those can be fun) I am more about the story.
I love it when a player
takes their own initiative and finds their own goals, even if it means splitting the party (keeping the party together is overrated. Split the party).
I think min/maxing...
is overrated IF it is used to make your character superman. A character with no flaws, that hits their mark every time, is a boring character. The story is mostly in the failures, in what your character does when they mess something up or fall into a trap. Only then can you be truly heroic!
