My favorite books are

Stephen King's Dark Tower Series, Ready Player 1 & 2 by Ernest Cline, Isles of the Emberdark by B. Sanderson

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Dynamic, Intuitive, Dedicated

When I'm not running games I'm...

Writing them! I do spend a lot of time coming up with new adventures, vlogging, blogging and contributing to the tabletop community as a whole. My other loves are music and the natural world. I play guitar as a singer-songwriter. I enjoy hiking, kayaking, cycling, video games and board games.

How Joey runs games

I prioritize storytelling, player inclusion and the importance of your choices above all else. I'll run a module or two, but I have a passion for Homebrew. I don't run a lot of combat encounters, but when I do, they're tougher. Narrative stakes fuel the battles I run and involve more than "just beat up the bad guys". My NPCs are quirky and rich, but never overshadow the players. Exploration is very wilderness-focused and rewarded. Inspired by game series like Zelda and Metroid and shows from Studio Ghibli, there are always interesting small nuggets you can find in every corner. I believe the world is your oyster. I tend to run vast frontier expanses with the occasional settlement rather than packed, interurban, developed worlds.

I once ran a session...

Where the characters were "Toy Story" action figures trying to stop a shady store owner from profiteering off Christmas toys in the underground market.

My favorite trope is...

The "Bruiser/tough character with a soft spot".

Rules are...

guardrails only. You can have fun by following them as written, but oftentimes the best moments (Rule of Cool) happen by challenging limitations.

Joey's ideal table

Players who want a dynamic, intuitive and approachable game will fit in (+bonus points if they're invested in characters and the story). Those who enjoy tracking the exact # of arrows in their inventory will not. We follow the rules, but we know we're just playing a game. It's just serious enough to matter, yet jovial enough for some laughs. People from all walks of life feel welcome at my table. LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, etc. If it were a physical space, imagine I open the door. I offer you a snack + hot chocolate, cider, tea, coffee or your choice of beverage, and we start speaking nerd.

I love it when a player

Embraces flaws, takes risks. They take the shiny thing and spring the trap. They save the animals rather than make the optimal combat move. They put themselves in grave danger to make a big play!

I think it's a red flag when players...

Have no respect/empathy for others. This can manifest in disregarding safety tools, badmouthing, etc.

My perfect party mix is

An imperfect one! I've seen players use more creative ideas for parties without a healer, a frontliner, etc.
