About Joe

I have been playing D&D since 2018 both as a player and as DM. I have experience DM'ing homebrew content as well as premade modules such as Lost Mines of Phandelver, Tyranny of Dragons, Vecna: Eve of Ruin, and Rime of the Frostmadien. My homebrew DM style tends to focus in the style of Dark Political Fantasy, defined by moral ambiguity where even the "good guys" are corrupted by their cause. It often focuses on high-stakes, atmospheric storytelling set against a backdrop of tyranny and insidious magical corruption.

I became a GM because

I enjoy building multiple stories and developing multiple scenarios and seeing what my players latch on too. I especially enjoy seeing when my players finally begin to see when the breadcrumbs of the story begin to finally make sense. Thats when I know I did a good job and I hooked my players in.

My favorite books are

A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Lord of the Rings series, and all of the Witcher books.

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing shows with my punk rock band, The Burn Vault and enjoying time with my wife and my two dogs.

How Joe runs games

I have experience DM'ing homebrew content as well as premade modules such as Lost Mines of Phandelver, Tyranny of Dragons, Vecna: Eve of Ruin, and Rime of the Frostmadien. My homebrew DM style tends to focus in the style of Dark Political Fantasy, defined by moral ambiguity where even the "good guys" are corrupted by their cause. It often focuses on high-stakes, atmospheric storytelling set against a backdrop of tyranny and insidious magical corruption. So my games tend to have a healthy mixture of both roleplay, high-stakes combat - but ultimately it's all depending on the decisions of what my players make at the end of the day, because they decide what happens in the adventure and I just set the scene. Also, at the end of the, I'm not a rules lawyer and I do believe in the rule of cool as well!

I deal with rules issues by...

having an open discussion with my players. Usually that solves the issue. If that does not solve the issue than we will do a vote. However at my table - the DM does have the authority overrule the rules, but I do not often do that. I do believe in the rule of cool and I often am pretty lenient.

I prep by

preparing maps in D&D beyond maps and usually have a general scenario worked out. A beginning and an end point. It's up to the players to figure out everything in between. I'm pretty comfortable with improvisation for the most part - it often creates for more interesting and memorable stories.

My favorite trope is...

Moral ambiguity. Not all good and evil is so obvious, and I love a good villain that is gray character, rather than just obviously outrageously evil character.

Joe's ideal table

I like my table to be between 3-5 players. I like my players to engaged with not just me but the other players they are playing with, players that are okay with some roleplaying (when running a campaign, some sessions may end up roleplay heavy based off of player decisions), and some sessions may also end up combat heavy as well (based off of player decisions as well), and also be okay with sometimes serious and immersive storytelling.

I am for a vibe that's...

just for having fun at the end of the day and for a good laugh.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

roleplaying, strategic combat, proactive storytelling, and moral dilemmas

My perfect party mix is

the party that enjoys it has a good time! That doesn't answer the question though, haha, so! A group who can speak well together, but perhaps one or two of them has more experience than the others and can guide the rest, and one new player but has all the new and exciting ideas - always is SUPER fun
