About AVALANCHE

Looking for a GM to take your game to the next level? Look no further. My name is Joey. I've been playing TTRPGs for over 27 years and a DM for friends and family over a variety of fantasy settings and games since 2003. I'm an avid fan of D&D literature and have read many amazing works from R.A. Salvatore, Ed Greenwood, and many others that serve as fuel for my encounters, blueprints for combat sequences, and inspiration for my plot points. Whether you're a fan of smashing things with a hammer until gold comes out of their ears or solving intricate puzzles/investigating mysteries, I'm here to deliver a thought provoking experience that is best accomplished with teamwork and the Rule of Cool. I'm an IT and Cybersecurity Major, and also have quite a deal of experience with Audio/Visual work. I enjoy curating beautifully crafted digital maps, evocative background music and ambiences, and leveraging Artificial Intelligence to fill in gaps (my artistic ability 🙃) and bring my stories to life. I've been playing Daggerheart for my in-person group and I'm loving the collaborative storytelling approach. It is now my preferred system to run games on!

I became a GM because

I enjoy crafting stories and games that bring joy to others. I've always enjoyed improvising and narrating stories.

I got started GMing...

My dad was the forever DM before me, and I took the reins from him so he could enjoy retirement.

My favorite books are

The Dark Elf Series by R.A. Salvatore, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and The Combat Codes.

How AVALANCHE runs games

I would describe my style as a blend of everything - a chameleon if you will. I love to get to know what my players like and aim to create content that is rich in depth. I'm an amateur when it comes to voices, but an expert in NPC personalities. I love creating challenging and unique combat scenarios, including alternate objectives and dynamic terrain/phases. I don't pull punches and am comfortable with open rolls and 'failing forward' skill challenges. Content I host will be considered appropriate for all ages.

I deal with rules issues by...

Implementing the Rule of Cool at all times applicable, studying the rulebooks in advance, and quick research if needed.

I prep by

Watching shows that inspire me, writing and proofreading, reviewing encounters/puzzles a few times to play them out in my head, and also testing my tech ahead of time

My games focus on...

Keeping everyone at the table engaged, working together, and moving in a direction

AVALANCHE's ideal table

My table consists of friendly and lighthearted players who like 4th wall shattering pop culture references baked into their adventures. On the serious side, my players often comment that they enjoy the fluidity of my games and my ability to improvise and sandbox. The world is yours, I'm just illustrating it as it comes to me. Also, I don't come to the table with run of the mill combat or puzzle encounters, so my players must be able to think on their feet and adapt to new/risky situations.

I love it when a player

Actually roleplays and involves others at the table!

I think it's a red flag when players...

Take everything personally and prevent themselves and others from having a good session.

I think min/maxing...

to each their own! The dice tell the story eventually >:)
