About Jason Mobley

Behind the screen for over 20+ years with experience across dozens of systems. Everything from One-Shots to 10-year campaigns, both homebrew and modules, you name it, I've probably run it at one point or another. I cut my teeth on D&D 2e and Champions (HERO System) 4e. My specialty is horror and action with a strong emphasis on player agency.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Writing poetry, coding, watching true crime, researching niche topics, drawing, doing photography, or immersing myself in some of the endless backlog of content associated with any of the above. I love B-horror and long walks through the uncanny valley. The ADHD goes brrrr.

How Jason Mobley runs games

Roleplay is passionately encouraged, especially if you have some silly voices to throw in to the mix. Exploring your character's personal conflict/core wound is great and I tend to theme chapters of my games around exploring one player's background at a time, rotating who has the spotlight as chapters end. My combats are snappy and the work is done behind the scenes to minimize the time drag that combat can represent (looking at you 5e). While I don't generally pull punches, no situation should simply kill a character without an opportunity to change the outcome. [IMPORTANT: Horror games are not safe, your character can die from bad luck] Creative thinking is rewarded, and I am loathe to shut down a plan the players have come up with. If you and your team come up with the perfect heist, it is not guaranteed to get spoiled. If you have a political machination you intend to pursue or you've decided the king must die, we can explore that and talk through how to make it happen. If your party wants to start a little business venture in game, totally cool, lets do it! After session, we do feedback as a group. This started with my annual Halloween Games and is now just a fact of my table. we'll discuss what you liked, what you hated, and if anyone has any concerns they want to bring up. Nobody should be in a game that isn't fun and no DM makes the perfect call every time. This is where we course correct and make sure everyone is having an enjoyable experience.

Rules are...

Tools for keeping your decisions meaningful as much as they are constraints on what can be done. If we have no rules, the game isn't a game. If we have too many, it isn't a creative story vehicle. Its the space between where games thrive.

Jason Mobley's ideal table

My ideal table has is full of players who are engaged in the plot, willing to roleplay, and who like to explore their character's thought process. Be present, be open, and we'll have an amazing time. We are here to tell a story without a defined ending. I'm not planning for how things end when you do "x", so much as I'm planning what happens if you don't get involved. I want my players to surprise me and come up with ideas my villains never would have accounted for. I'm very beginner friendly and I've onboarded dozens of players over the years into some very complex systems (HERO). Lastly, feedback is critical. I do 5-10mins of feedback at the end of every session. If you don't feel comfortable airing something there, I'm happy to talk individually.

I think min/maxing...

is valid as long as it doesn't detract from everyone's fun. Generally, everyone should be on a similar level of optimization, but it isn't always necessary. Asymmetric capabilities can be a trope or a feature in a system without a heavy combat focus. (See Cyberpunk or Call of Cthulhu)
