About Jake

Free session 0 for all games!!! Hi! I’m Jake, I’m 20 years old and I’m an art student, I’ve been playing dungeons and dragons since I was a kid but have started taking it more seriously over the past few years. I really enjoy storytelling and world-building, which often serve as the focal points in my campaigns. I ran my first professional game for a group a few years ago but took a step away from D&D as a whole when I began going to school full time. This, however, resulted in me getting quite a lot of practice in the arts, and I believe it helped my campaign creation as a whole.

I became a GM because

My friends and I all started playing when we were like 12, and I ended up becoming the DM for our first attempts at campaigns by default. I actually believe it's because I had the best handwriting! I began taking it seriously because I fell in love with storytelling and worldbuilding.

My favorite shows/movies are

I practically grew up in Middle-Earth, with The Fellowship of the Ring being my parents' favorite movie. I grew into a big anime fan, and Full Metal Alchemist is probably my favorite series. Jujutsu Kaisen is probably my favorite at the moment, though!

When I'm not running games I'm...

I'm always playing video games or watching YouTube. I'm currently playing the Dragon Age series! I also go to school full-time as an art student, and spend a lot of my free time creating art or working on my projects for school.

How Jake runs games

I’m very heavy into storytelling, decision-making, and atmosphere, you can expect the game itself to take a back seat when theme or narrative is more important.

I deal with rules issues by...

Please don't argue with me over the rules. I will usually stick to them within reason, with the exclusion of "Rule of Cool". Nobody, especially not your fellow player, enjoys watching us argue over 3 HP or advantage. I am trying to tell a story, not "win", I hope players can trust my judgement here.

I prep by

I write most of my own campaigns and prep those with very detailed world-building documents, in the double-digits of pages. Session prep usually gets its own page or two as well. Expect the tavern keeper to have a page of backstory as well as the BBEG; plenty of narrative to find here!

Rules are...

A way to make a written story playable. Sometimes necessary, sometimes unnecessary, rules are tools for me and the players to use to convert our ideas into a game.

Jake's ideal table

Storytelling is always my number one priority, and players who enjoy my stories and enjoy writing as well will fit better at my table. I'm usually pretty honest with my players and will tell people when they're heading in the wrong direction, meaning that people who enjoy "breaking" campaigns would not enjoy themselves at my table. My style always varies by the campaign, but my homebrew games are almost always narrative-driven, and players are encouraged to follow the obvious story beats.

I love it when a player

Gets invested!!! I love it when players ask questions about their characters or the world I've built. Showing me you care, and you're enjoying yourself, is the best motivation for me to write great stories.

I think min/maxing...

Has its place. I love Baldur's Gate and smiting foes into oblivion, but I often stay away from playing like this at a table. Players should feel correctly powerful based on the progression in the campaign, and when characters get too powerful, I'll just end up changing the threat scaling.

My table is not the place for...

"Winning", this is a role-playing game! Characters will experience both sides of battle, and players who refuse to lose will not enjoy playing at my table. People who don't allow the game to put their characters in dark places won't get to enjoy the process of climbing out from there. Trust me!!!
