About Kathryn

Oh hi there! My name is Katie and I've been playing tabletop games for over 5 years and recently have been GM-ing for just under a year. I'm the kind of player/GM that's always learning and always open to new ideas and options to improve the experience for myself and for those I play with, and though it's been stressful at times figuring out what the party should do next, my first ever homebrew game has been a lot of fun for everyone involved! I look forward to running more games, either pre-written modules or crazy creations of my own design, and I hope you're as eager to play them as I am!

I became a GM because

I love love LOVE to create worlds and settings! The whole idea of building an epic tale with new and close friends is such a joy to me, and I love creating these dynamics between player characters and the world to ground everything together. We're all creating amazing moments together!

I got started GMing...

When another campaign I was in started to fizzle out. I had an idea for a fun homebrew adventure that my friends and I could do, and after setting up a Discord and fiddling with Foundry a little bit, we got started and have been playing for just under a year!

People are always surprised when I tell them

"Yeah I didn't prepare that part at all." Though I try my best to prep and have writing in play for my sessions, when things start to go a little off the rails I rely on my improv skills to keep things running smoothly. I tweak my notes after session, and no one knows I had to think on the spot!

How Kathryn runs games

I am a storyteller at heart, and my mix of roleplay and combat is always planned to be impactful to side quests and the overall plot. If your character has lots of backstory details, you are absolutely going to have those details to haunt you either early on or as the game progresses to tie everyone's characters into the main quest. Keep an eye out for any small details I let slip, as those may or may not be hints for something that'll either help the party or turn the entire plot on its head. More than storytelling though, I love options! One of my favourite aspects of a game is having 5-6 ways to solve a problem to really open up player creativity, and I try to give my players various choices throughout the campaign to reflect this. From small choices of food to life or death options, I believe giving players a variety of options allows for the most fun, as it lets players change the narrative in whatever way they desire.

Kathryn's ideal table

My table is a mix of seriousness and silliness. It's a place where meaningful and touching roleplay can happen right after the party finishes explaining to the shopkeep "No, birds can't talk. You're just crazy." It's a place where I try my best to give everyone moments to shine and to make the sessions as entertaining as possible, whether that be for the social aspect, the roleplay and immersion, or the tactics and combat. All in all, my table is a welcoming place where there are no stupid questions. Only stupid character decisions (which I will fully support).

I love it when a player

Takes notes and asks questions! I'm a nerd when it comes to lore (especially lore that I'm writing!), so if players ask questions or try to connect their characters more to the plot and the setting I get really happy and excited to tell them more.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Start to push the limit on what's comfortable for the DM and the other players. All in all, we're all in this game together to have fun and make stories with each other, so hogging all the spotlight or bringing up uncomfortable topics can really skew that and ruin the experience.

My perfect party mix is

The classic ragtag misfits with tragic pasts! It's my favourite thing ever when the bad guys of the plot are written right in a character's backstory. The more details I have to work with, the more I have to implement into the world and give the party THEIR story!
