About GM Guthrie

Greetings, adventurers! My name is Guthrie, and I'm excited to be your next GM! I've been running TTRPG games for many years now, from fantasy classics like D&D 5E to the eldritch horrors of Call of Cthulhu and beyond. I'm always ready to embark on another epic journey and I'd love it if you would come along for the ride. As an aspiring author, RPGs are second-to-none for creating exciting narratives, compelling personal journeys, and fantastic worlds in my opinion. I try to bring a true passion for storytelling to every game I run, whether they be multi-year campaigns or one-shots written in an hour. I love narrative games with lots of roleplaying, but I'm no stranger to exciting combat and brain-scratching puzzles. I also enjoy a lot of mystery and humor in any story I happen to be telling. Inclusiveness is important to me, and I make it my personal goal to ensure that everyone at my table (physical or otherwise) is comfortable and having fun!

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

D&D 5E, Delta Green, and Mothership.

When I'm not running games I'm...

writing games to run later.

I became a GM because

I have a long standing passion for creative storytelling and game design, both things I think TTRPGs excel at.

How GM Guthrie runs games

In general, my strengths lie in games that focus on narrative and character. This applies to player characters especially, and having players who take active roles in affecting the world, characters, and story around them is one of the things that makes these games truly worth playing to me. Humor is another important aspect of storytelling to me. I firmly believe that without it, stories lose a key component to building compelling characters and worlds. (Plus, who doesn't love a bad pun?) With all of that being said, I want nothing more than for players to tell me exactly how they like to play. That could be a heavy focus on combat, massive amounts of exploration, impossible puzzles, or endless roleplaying, my GM style is extremely malleable and I'm always excited to try something new! The comfort and enjoyment of my players is my top priority, and I will do everything I can to make sure that everyone has a safe and pleasant time. I strive to create a fun atmosphere where everyone feels secure and able to enjoy the game to its fullest.

My favorite trope is...

the good ol' cliffhanger. Gotta keep 'em coming back next week!

Rules are...

I deal with rules issues by...

GM Guthrie's ideal table

I try my best to run a close-knit and fun table whenever I run a game, with the feeling of hanging out with your friends on a Saturday night and the production value of an Actual Play podcast. I use art, handouts, detailed maps, music, and soundscapes whenever possible, and I strive for consistent and professional storytelling. If you like long-running campaigns that last for months or even years, you're in the right place. Thanks to StartPlaying, I've forged lasting friendships that have since escaped the bounds of the internet and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I am for a vibe that's...

as fun as it is filled with juicy drama.

I love it when a player

makes a bold or risky choice that could change the direction of the story rather than playing it safe.

My perfect party mix is

a healthy combination of roleplayers, combat enjoyers, and lore lovers.
