About Gaul

Hi there! I'm Gaul! I have a passion for creating immersive, atmospheric tabletop experiences. When I'm not behind the GM screen, I'm usually deep in my study where I design TTRPG supplements under my publishing label, Lichcraft Spell Components. I believe a great game is a blend of high-stakes adventure, evocative emergent story-telling, and a touch of the weird. My goal as a GM is to provide a space where player agency is paramount and every session feels like a collaborative work of art. I specialize in running games that prioritize discovery. My GMing style is heavily influenced by the OSR (Old School Renaissance) movement, focusing on player ingenuity, exploration, and dangerous, lived-in worlds. My journey with tabletop games spans a wide range of systems, from the modern tactical depth of Dungeons and Dragons to the streamlined, lethal elegance of Old-School Essentials. Whether you're a veteran looking for a gritty dungeon crawl or a newcomer wanting to learn the ropes of a classic system, I'm here with you as a fellow actor on the stage we create together.

I became a GM because

When my cousin and I first got the starter box for 3.5, we had no clue what to do. The box said there was a role called the "Dungeon Master" and I was intrigued. Plus, my cousin really wanted to play Kerwyn the Rogue, a prefab character that came with the box (He thought the name was funny).

My favorite system of all Time is

I am really enjoying Old-School Essentials (OSE)!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Creating modular adventures and supplements for 5e and Old-School Essentials. Hanging out with my wife doing DIY projects. Petting our cats.

How Gaul runs games

When you join one of my sessions, you aren't just playing a game; you're stepping into a whole new world. My GM'ing style is a mix of "old school" grit with the panache of the new. I lean heavily into the OSR (Old-School Renaissance) style. This means: - Player Ingenuity Over Character Sheets: You won't solve every problem by clicking a button on a digital sheet. I reward clever thinking, environmental interaction, and out-of-the-box solutions. - High Stakes & Meaningful Danger: Combat is often tactical and high-stakes. I my games, the world is dangerous, and survival feels earned. I don't "fudge" dice; I let the story unfold naturally based on your choices. - Player Agency: I provide the sandbox, you provide the direction. Whether we are running a published module or a sprawling hex-crawl, the narrative is driven by where you want to go with it. As an artist and designer, I believe the "vibe" of the table is just as important as the mechanics. Expect: - Custom-designed Visuals: From quality maps to evocative handouts and item cards. - Atmospheric Storytelling: I draw inspiration from gothic themes, weird fiction, and dark fantasy to create a "lived in" world that feels mysterious and occasionally eerie. The table environment is always inclusive and safe. I utilize standard Safety Tools (like Lines/Veils and the X-Card) to ensure everyone can enjoy the high-stakes drama while feeling comfortable and respected.

I deal with rules issues by...

When encountering a rules issue, I implement a one-minute timer. We use the time to look up the rule during that time limit to determine the proper outcome. If the rule isn't clear, I will then make a ruling that is fair and equitable to the player and situation.

Gaul's ideal table

I like players who lean into the role-play and loves to do silly voices with me. The general vibe is fun! We're all looking to escape, so let's make the best of the time we have allotted.
