About Sean R.

Welcome, adventurers! My name is Sean, I’m a GM who loves nothing more than collaborating with players to tell stories that are immersive and dramatic yet whimsical and heartfelt. New players looking to explore the world of D&D? Veterans looking for a new adventure? All are welcome! I am committed to ensuring all players feel safe and comfortable as they explore new worlds and live out their fantasies. I run character-driven games where the choices you make matter and the world adapts to your playstyle, personal preferences, and character choices. I especially love bringing new players into this wonderful world of collaborative storytelling.

I got started GMing...

six years ago because my friends wanted to get into TTRPGs, but we couldn’t find anyone willing to run a game for beginners, so I taught myself D&D 5e and stepped into the role. Since then, I’ve been a committed forever GM who loves nothing more than getting new players into TTRPGs!

My favorite system of all Time is

Grant Howitt's one page adventures. This is kind of cheating because Grant Howitt actually makes many systems, but I just love how he manages to condense all the wonder of TTRPG's into such approachable, one-page games that can be played as easily as a board game.

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing video games, playing guitar, or working on my more academic pursuits. My background is in history and archaeology, and I continue to follow those passions in everything I do, including in TTRPGs. I often find that there is so much overlap between all forms of human storytelling!

How Sean R. runs games

I specialize in welcoming new players into well-prepared, story-driven games where they’re free to approach every problem their own way. My sessions are carefully structured with clear objectives, understandable stakes, and a strong narrative throughline, so players always know what they’re engaging with and why it matters. Within that structure, player freedom is absolute. I build flexible scenarios that respond to creative thinking, unexpected choices, and character-driven decisions. I want players to be able to explore and experiment without ever feeling lost. I’m always happy to bend rules thoughtfully when it helps a player understand their abilities, lean into a character moment, or try something exciting. I strongly believe that rules serve the story, not the other way around. Whether the campaign is dark and grim or light and whimsical, my goal is always the same: memorable sessions where players feel supported, engaged, and excited to see what happens next.

I once ran a session...

where a player character (who was a reindeer) tried to go UP a zipline by clutching a piece of cloth thrown over the rope and jumping. We made it work.

My games focus on...

my players! Every time I try to run a standard book campaign, I end up customizing the story to fit the players' backstories, desires, and all the weird little details players love to attach themselves to. I love nothing more than watching my players realize the world is built around their choices!

Rules are...

meant to be bent. I’m always happy to bend (or on occasion, fully break) rules when it helps a player understand their abilities, lean into a character moment, or try something exciting. I strongly believe that rules serve the story, not the other way around.

Sean R.'s ideal table

I strive to create a table where players show up and can immerse themselves in a totally different world and truly become their characters. That said, I also like to keep it light and encourage players to joke and have fun. In my view, the goal of TTRPGs is to have fun, tell a story collaboratively, and be creative. And what's beautiful to me is that that looks different to each individual. For some, that means creating the most perfectly optimized, min-maxed, monstrosity of a character, and for others, it means purposefully creating a silly character that is just terrible mechanically; both are totally viable and wonderful additions to my table! The table is made up of its parts, so we decide the tone together.

I love it when a player

messes up my plans, tries something daring or ill-advised, or forges a new direction. I love being put on my back foot, because it allows me to be as creative as my players. If we always stick to what I've planned, I will already know most of what will happen, so please, trick me, befuddle me!

I think it's a red flag when players...

edge lords.

My table is not the place for...

people who want to use TTRPGs as a place for enacting fantasies of cruelty or oppression. Evil villain campaigns are fine, but there are boundaries that we will all set together at the start of the campaign. If anyone at my table is uncomfortable for any reason, play comes to a stop.
