About Gabriel

Hey, I'm Gabriel and I can't seem to stop worldbuilding. I often find myself making up lore, sometimes for a game but often just for myself. Whether I'm coming up with encounters, NPCs, or magic items, I'm always thinking about how they will fit into the world and what effect they will have, drawing stories and plotlines from the actions of the people in the world. This applies to you and your character too, of course! Whether it's drawing on your backstory, or following up on the decisions you make, my worlds remain a living thing that reacts to how you interact with it. I'm a GM from Quito, Ecuador who's been GMing since 2019 and professionally since 2021 after trying out paid games and deciding to give it a go myself. Though I am new to listing games on this site, I have been doing this for a while now. Since then, I've increasingly gotten into creating homebrew mechanics, starting with magic items you'll find scattered across my world, and extending to whole mechanics like my downtime and crafting rules. I've also recently started creating subclasses, so let me know if you're interested in trying out the Fleshcarver Barbarian, or the Oath of Secrets Paladin. I mostly run D&D, but am very much looking to expand into other game systems.

I ran my first game...

for my cousins, and immediately killed my sister's character when she walked face first into a series of traps I did not expect anyone to fall into one after the other. I have not made that assumption again.

When I'm not running games I'm...

worldbuilding, homebrewing, or at the movies.

How Gabriel runs games

As a GM I generally allow players to take the reigns and show me where they want the story to go. Narratively I am fairly flexible, but can be less so ruleswise, though I wouldn't say I am entirely inflexible either. If in doubt, I will generally leave things up to a dice roll. My games tend have a lot of opportunity for roleplay and exploration, though I prefer to follow my players' lead on how much to include of each. There is also plenty of combat, but I try to make sure that it serves a purpose and has stakes. If there is no possibility of failure, then I more and more don't see the point of a combat encounter. This doesn't mean every fight is deadly, but the ones that are not will usually have some other objective. Sometimes it may be both. I do also like to include puzzles, but try do so sparsely as they can be tricky. Sometimes these may be more abstract in nature, and sometimes they may be more traditional dungeon puzzles. If you go into a proper dungeon in one of my games, there will probably be puzzles.

I deal with rules issues by...

rolling dice when all else fails.

My games focus on...

exploring the world, becoming entrenched in the various plots and machinations of its people, and having to make difficult decisions about which to deal with and how.

Rules are...

the law, but sometimes the law is nonsense and you need to make up your own ones.

I love it when a player

does something that takes the story in a new and unexpected direction.

I think min/maxing...

is an opportunity to make more difficult encounters. It can be challenging to GM, but not a problem as long as every PC gets their moment to shine.
