About Qylar

I've been a writer and creator my whole life, and I have found no greater joy than telling epic stories with people who really want to weave a tale and explore a world together. I'm a character-centric, fun-focused, improv-heavy GM who's run two ongoing long-form campaigns and many one-shots and short adventures over 6+ years, and introduced dozens of people to D&D 5e. I ~love~ teaching new people how to play, and watching them learn and really settle in is one of my favorite things!

I became a GM because

I loved playing D&D since it was first introduced to me, and I found friends who wanted to play but didn't know the rules yet. I did, and offered to be the DM while teaching them the game. I've also been writing for years, so storytelling, characters, and giving descriptions came naturally to me!

My favorite system of all Time is

Dungeons and Dragons 5e! It's an extremely flexible system once you know the structure. It allows for you to tell a wide variety of stories, it's easy to add things without unbalancing the whole thing, and there's SO MANY amazing 3rd party resources for it!

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing in them, fairly often! I also love going on long walks with my dog, hanging out with family and friends, watching actual plays, making maps, writing fanfic for my own D&D characters, and finding new cool music. Also getting back into reading after a multi-year hiatus!

How Qylar runs games

I love to roleplay NPCs (voices are so fun to do!), sketch out the setting and tone with vivid descriptions, and work together with players to tell a story we're all excited to be part of. I run games in my homebrew worlds, which makes me extremely comfortable improvising and adapting to player character (PC) choices. I enjoy figuring out how to interweave character goals and backstories with the lore and plot, so the story is one that everyone can invest in. I love it when characters attach themselves to a facet of my world, whether that's an NPC, a town, a faction, or a piece of the lore, and some of my favorite things in-game have come from giving the player the chance to invent things in the world along with me. I truly believe that 'collaborative' is the most important word when describing roleplaying/storytelling games, and I do my very best to help my players feel welcome to ask questions, try things, and explore their limits. I also believe that TTRPGs can be places where it's safe to experiment and face problems of all types, both in the story and in ourselves. I've learned so much about myself by playing these games, and I wouldn't be who I am today without them. I want other people who want that experience to have it, and I try my hardest to make sure that players can feel safe at my table if they decide they want to experiment and explore. I'm excited to meet new players and tell new stories!

My games focus on...

building stories around the characters, driven by character motivations and actions, and creating a story together that matters to everyone at the table. It's important to me that players get to explore themes, tropes, and arcs that are important to them, and have a hand in their own story beats!

Rules are...

there so you know when and how far you can bend them to create epic moments and build fun and interesting characters! The structure is very important, but it's equally important to be able to tell where structure ends and furniture begins, so you can create the space to play that you'll enjoy most!

When it comes to voices

I love doing accents, voices, and affectations, and using those to really give personality to NPCs! Sometimes a distinct vocal pattern is more powerful and memorable than a wild accent, and can tell you so much about how a character sees and interacts with the world!
