About Syd

Hello! I'm Sydney (or just Syd if you prefer) Im a trans woman that really loves TTRPGs!!! I'm a pretty chill gm that's in it for the cooperative storytelling angle, I like it most when systems take advantage of the medium of Table Top Role Playing! Other than that I've been running and playing TTRPGs for a little over 6 years now with a good amount of that being homebrew adventures and some of it being pre-written ones. Most of my hobbies involve table-top RPGs in one way or another (i.e. homebrew/tabletop game design stuff!) I have extensive Foundry experience, and I run most of my game on it, though Foundry knowledge is never a requirement for my games!

I became a GM because

Its fun. Well, initially that's why I became a GM, but then I discovered my love of cooperative storytelling that Table Top RPGs take advantage of to such a high degree, even the ones I don't particularly care for I find so much more enjoyable than CRPGs.

I got started GMing...

"Junkyard D&D." Which is to say, D&D with almost no rules, You want to make an attack roll? Sure, roll a d20 plus your strength, you want to make a basic skillcheck? What skills? Just roll the D20 and add the modifier. You want to attack twice this turn? Sure, we'll just call it a relentless attack.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Pathfinder 2nd Edition, Starwars RPG (by EDGE studios), and Mage The Ascension 20th Edition. I prefer to run games that I know i would love to play (except for mage, i would love to play that but something about me GMing and World of Darkness just doesnt compute)

How Syd runs games

I mostly run Rules as Intended and Rule of Cool in my games, with the focus being on role-play and problem-solving, though there is a good amount of combat that I like to run where the objective isn't just "Go and defeat all these guys in this room."

I deal with rules issues by...

What makes sense in the moment and in the context/story of the game im running. If a player argues they should be able to climb upside down, and I'm running Cyberpunk, they better have the cyberware to do it.

My games focus on...

Heroes! I love seeing characters turn from nobodies and rise to a challenge to save the day and/or the world, depending on the stakes of the game. I'm of the school of thought where my power fantasy is to be able to help everyone, though that doesn't mean I never have moral dilemmas or gray areas!

When it comes to voices

I'd like to think I do my best? I used to avoid doing a lot of voices because I could never take myself seriously, but I'm starting to do more and more and trying to learn that I shouldn't take myself so seriously.

I love it when a player

Completely breaks my expectations, when they're in a chase and a player thinks to use their spider climb to just start running vertically up a wall, or when they're in a combat and decide to hack into an opponents cybernetic arm to get them to punch themselves.

I think min/maxing...

Is good in some systems, in games like Pathfinder, they almost encourage you too. But in games like Genesys min/maxing is only really fine if the entire party is doing it.

My table is not the place for...

AI art, I understand if you like AI art but respectfully, please don't bring it to my table!
