About Paul

I started DMing Dungeons and dragons 5e in 2015 and have recently picked up Daggerheart. I use fantasy grounds for my games as I tried other platforms but this was my preference. I have run games for people in person and online through campaigns and oneshots. I am no stranger to homebrew as i use one form or another in each of my games but I tend not to use stuff i didn't make or help make with a player.

I ran my first game...

I ran my first game in 2015, I read the books and winged it through goblin ambush into first distraction and ended the first session in Phandalin with whole party plus DM as new players, learned the ins and outs. I took that campaign until covid and scheduling broke it up around lv 18.

My favorite books are

Arcane Ascension, He who fights with Monsters, Mark of the Fool, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Expeditionary force, Bobiverse, Fear the Sky, Harry Potter, Eragon, Project Hail Mary, The Martian, Forth Wing, Off to be the Wizard, Ready Player One, How to Defeat a Demon King in ten easy Steps, I ran out of Sp

When I'm not running games I'm...

Playing Final Fantasy XIV, I'm currently a Miqo'te (catgirl) Dancer(ranged dps) with secondary class being a Sage(healer). I'm at basically max level and gear with dancer and working on leveling the others.

How Paul runs games

I'm here to run games for new and returning players. My games will likely have some elements in them that are realistic for the world they are in, some historical events may be similar but no new events will be in games. Some players may have certain things they don't want in their games so i prefer to cut them off early. Session 0 will usually be players getting program and making characters, games will have violence, political events, and character trauma. Nothing sexual will be in game, like a video game with permanent underclothes. Characters will not be sleeping with bosses or npcs. No torture will be in game, there could be a sequence where you were captured and interrogated but it would be a dice roll to see if you gave up information before either escaping or being recued. Any more specific game limitations can be handled privately in messages. No PVP in game, general understanding that all party members are coworkers that are on same side. players may duel or spar if both players are in agreement and non lethal only, any effect that would take PC to 0 hit points instead ends combat and resets health to value before duel.

I deal with rules issues by...

A quick ruling at the moment and a rules lookup and vote with players on how to homebrew how it works in future, some times i will bend rules for fun of the game and sometimes I have a story reason for strict rules following.

My games focus on...

For dungeons and Dragons I like Dungeon crawling and mechanics focus with some role playing depending on group, I like to see how a party overcomes adversaries through skill and planning. For Daggerheart I like to have more roleplaying but still like a good fight.

Rules are...

Like Iron, with some effort it can be adjusted but its pretty resilient.

Paul's ideal table

My table looks like the council of Elrond where people talk about how to confront a problem and make a plan to do it, it may go hilariously off the rails but i like a plan to build off at least having a point A to point B, maybe we go through point C-J to get there but we come around in the end.

I love it when a player

takes notes and puts together hints of overarching story before its revealed to them.

I think metagaming...

Doesn't have a place at my table, Your character knowledge matters, If your character rolls poorly that's how the luck went for one reason or another and it should be roleplayed through, everybody in the party re-rolling a check cause they know that the first person failed wont work at my table

My table is not the place for...

Theory crafting the perfect character with AC of 50 and no flaws, Multi-classing needs to have a in world reason your character went down a path, from my experience if your character only real starts working at one thing at level 15 then they will probably die before then.
