About JayGee

Greetings, Adventurers! I am Dungeon Master JayGee (JayGee is fine)! I have been enthralled with the world of Dungeons & Dragons since my first experience with 3rd edition in high school and I am now running 5e and the 2024 edition of the greatest role playing game in the world! I use D&D Beyond for my games but I am currently learning other platforms to accommodate the needs of the party. My favorite part of the game, aside from seeing you all succeed, is taking on the roles of the various characters that help bring your adventure to life! The opportunity to entertain you through comical or cartoonish characters or provide you with a dastardly villain to fear and overcome is the music to my very soul! I take great pride telling stories of horror stricken lands and whimsical wonders alike! To bring you, the players, into and through the fantastical tales of which the bards will sing and scribe in your names for ages to come! Or… perhaps they will sing a warning of the wake of destruction, fear or corruption that you and your companions sewed upon the masses? Whether you wish to embark on a tale of heroism or malice, I wish only to provide you with the imagery and tools to see if the dice of fate are in favor of your deeds! Join me and always… give it your best role!

My favorite system of all Time is

Without any hesitation, D&D 5e. I’m still working through some changes in the 2024 set, but so far it is mostly positive! I know it’s getting a little backlash, but the rule books are well organized, simple enough for new players (very important) and still offer a lot to veterans!

People are always surprised when I tell them

The door wasn't locked... No, you did not level up yet... Sure! you can try that!

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Clever, Sarcastic, Honest

How JayGee runs games

My style as a GM can change based on the campaign theme and the style that the players desire. But generally, I love to paint vivid imagery of combat highlights, role play characters as uniquely as I am capable and make use of character skills frequently! I stay relatively close to rules as written in most cases, but I love finding those moments where the rules don’t cover something and I have to create a check on the spot! And I am ALWAYS open to a player asking to do something that may not work within the rules but paints a great character moment and helps drive the narrative! In combat, I utilize creatures based on their suggested behavior and I lean toward being as tactical as possible without completely overrunning my party. I want your healer to use those fantastic healing spells, help actions and for the party to roll those health potions and short rests!! Traps are so wonderful for making sure resources don’t go to waste!

I deal with rules issues by...

Considering the situation and what skill or save would best drive the scene forward for the characters while providing a sense of urgency and drama that hopefully makes a memorable moment whether it succeeds or fails! If it's a spell rule, I lean heavily towards how the description is worded.

My favorite trope is...

Bringing character flaws to light! It's always difficult for newer players. But when it's poked and played out decently, it always makes for highly entertaining role play!

My games focus on...

Reward and consequence. Whether it be a trap, a dialogue exchange or surviving the treacherous conditions of the current scene, rewarding clever thought and role play drives the narrative forward with great results and dire consequences also paint dramatic imagery that add tension and circumstance!

JayGee's ideal table

I like to keep my table moving at a reasonable pace! If players get stumped remain silent, I like to address it by detailing the scenario a bit more directly to help guide or coax player interaction! I am also always on the lookout for a good (or bad) punchline! Even when the scene is tense, laughter makes the dice spin round! The vibe I've noticed among all the tables I've run is laughter and a sense of togetherness! New players and seasoned vets alike! We all love to see new people come in, struggle a bit and then come into their own as the campaign continues! If you like good laughs, and some gritty near death scenarios that you will overcome (or not) with a group of people backing you up along the way, I think we'll have a great time together!

I love it when a player

Plays into the scene with dramatic flare! If the enemy begins playing on part of a characters backstory and the player jumps in to describe the emotional state of their character in response, that is the GOLD that these games are made for! Inspiration granted for all of you!

I think it's a red flag when players...

Knowingly do something that jeopardizes or antagonizes their party members and claim "It's what my character would do!" You are teammates and should be working toward the same end. This only works out if it's comical and holds no serious consequences to the scene.

I think metagaming...

Ruins the heart and soul of the game. A big part of a TTRPG is seeing things unfold based on player interaction with the ongoing story. If it's not your first time playing the campaign, there are ways to separate player knowledge from character knowledge using skill checks.
