About DemonhunterGM

Hi, I am Sam I'm a Scottish Autistic looking to make his long-term hobby of TTRPGs into a stable source of income. My nerd background is in fantasy having fallen in love with LotR at a young age and having consumed tomes of many worlds since but I also have a great love for cosmic horror and obviously the myriad nerd interests i.e. comics, anime, sci-fi, internet horror (creepypasta, SCP), etc. I enjoy GMing games of D&D (with 10yrs experience and 30+ different players), though I have been looking recently to get into other systems. These games have been a central part of my life since high school, and my outlet both for creativity and opening up socially and through them did I learn my passion for writing and art which have also become burgeoning professional interest in the past couple years. My hope in taking this professionally is to be able to provide for those around me and gain a sense of purpose as well as to give back to this community which has given so much to me especially those needing a place to open up, create and meet friends like I did as kid.

I got started GMing...

At 12, after a family tragedy, as a means to connect with my family and friends and to open up socially, and ever since it has been a pillar of my life.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

D&D 5e Call of Cthulu City of Mist

My favorite books are

LotR, Dune, Legend of Drizzt, Black Magician Trilogy, Septimus Heap

How DemonhunterGM runs games

I'm big on RP and love working with players who are enthusiastic to write and tie in lore and backgrounds into gameplay, and I am open to homebrew (having made some of my own classes, magic items and races for D&D). I tend to run high fantasy or grim horror games with the intent for in-depth character growth and interaction, where players have a chance to learn about the world but also write it. I try to create interesting mysteries and locations to be explored, but also dynamic and exciting battles. My stories tend to centre around the motivations of the characters themself and what drives them with a particular interest in their philosophies and social pressures (I'm a bit of a social sciences nerd), and what can create and break their bonds and push them to betray or prove their ideals. I try to make my games a happy and safe space for all; as such, I am open to any individual joining my games regardless of background, and with my vast experience with newcomers, experience level is no issue either.

My games focus on...

Roleplaying interesting and interconnected stories focused on character motivations and philosophies, specifically, I enjoy telling stories about internal conflict and how the world and the individuals within it affect each other.

Rules are...

necessary to make a balanced and fair playing field. That said, they are also there to be broken when it makes for a more fun and interesting story, so long as everyone is on board.

When it comes to voices

I try to the best of my ability to separate NPCs using voices and enjoy doing them for players' enjoyment, but don't expect players at the table to do them if they struggle or don't feel comfortable doing so.

DemonhunterGM's ideal table

I enjoy tables that work with each other and try to spotlight their fellow players especially those invested in creating interesting stories and tying it to the world and lore to create deep and interesting RP.

Featured Prompts

I love it when a player

Tries to bring another in whether it is one scene, tied interests or combined backstories.

I think metagaming...

is necessary for making a safe and fun game, as such above table talk with the interest of making sure everyone is having fun or feels safe is lauded; but doing so to win or interrupt the story is ill-advised.

I think min/maxing...

Is fine and even fun if done with the intent of being useful to the party but if done to be the main character can bore other players or lead to conflict and if only 1 does it can create balance problems, as such i like to discuss it in session 0.
