About Dave

Hey-Howdy Everybody! I am Dave, the DM from Leaders N Legacies, a 5e D&D podcast. I returned to D&D in 2018 after 20 years of performing and instructing improvisation with a troop here in the DC area. I came back to roleplay because it's a performance stage open to all and it is just plain amazing to see how different people respond to the same scenarios. As a DM I like to focus on FUN. Combat, Roleplay and Exploration merge together to create narratives/stories we can all enjoy. At the end of the day if we aren't having fun something is going very wrong. We will do this together by creating a space where everyone is comfortable and safe to explore. We will do this using source books of existing adventures (Wizards of the Coast, Kobold Press, GMsGuild, etc.). For now I use Roll20 and DNDBeyond (and Discord) to bring my games together. For examples of my DM style you can check out leadersnlegacies.com/episodes/ or find us on your favorite podcast platform (Apple, Anchor, Stitcher, etc.)

I got started GMing...

I need a hobby that wasn't scouting (i was driving my wife nuts). I had a group of friends that kept talking about playing, but never starting. I end that in 2018 by running Fate and Lost Mines of Phandelver for them. I have been DMing ever since.

My favorite books are

The Dragon Reborn (Robert Jordan), Ready Player One (Earnest Cline), Fletch (Gregory McDonald), The Executioners (John D. MacDonald... the source material for Cape Fear), The Stand & The Drawing of the Three (Steven King) and anything by Chuck Palahniuk.

When I'm not running games I'm...

involved with Scouting America. I lead adult trainings and rope leaders into playing D&D with me. I also am looking to form a gaming Venturing Crew. Check out our podcast: https://leadersnlegacies.com/

How Dave runs games

As a GM I waffle between RAW (Rules as Written) and ROC (Rule of Cool). I will always choose the fun choice rather than being the rules police about most things (am strict about AC being hit on what your AC is at). I try to be fun and fair. I will correct mistakes in favor of game play. I love to get folks to "tell me more about..". We will focus on keepinging the story moving but will have some sessions were combat rules the day.
