About Dan

I have been playing TTRPGs for a number of years, after a life long love affair with RPG's like Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age / Mass Effect. Having spent a long time watching Actual Plays like Dimension 20 and Critical Role while listening to podcasts like Dungeons and Daddies, NADDPOD and Adventure Zone, I wanted to give it a try myself. I began playing D&D 5th Edition during lockdown, finding a group via Reddit which I still play with today. I quickly transitioned from a player to a GM and currently run two long running campaigns (coming up on two years now on both) as well as dozens of short form adventures and one-shots of all shapes and styles.

I became a GM because

As much as I love being a player, and I do, the joy I get from shaping a story with my own players and watching the joy, triumph, despair and emotions as the adventure plays out stays with me years after the fact.

I got started GMing...

When our introductory campaign began to break down due to scheduling issues, I took up the mantle and began running Forgotten Realms and Exandria campaigns for my friends, instantly falling in love with the world building and campaign planning.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Usually immersed in different fantasy and sci-fi worlds through video games, books, podcasts, TV series or audio books.

How Dan runs games

I truly believe the whole point of Roleplaying games is to work with your players to weave a fantastic story that stays with you long after the dice stop rolling! In my time as a GM, I've found a deep love of both the thrill of combat, and being lost in the moments of inter-party roleplaying and drama. My personal favourite thing is working with players on their back stories and past experiences and bringing those personal touches into my games. I relish the challenge of crafting an immersive world, and even when taking "out of the box" modules, will endeavour to take what you bring to the table and create an experience that will be personalised to the people sat at my table. I have always, and will always, follow the rule of cool, and do my absolute best to always "yes, and" my player's choices at the table. At the end of the day, it's OUR game, I am just holding the rudder, guiding the story to it's many fantastical conclusions. If this sounds like your idea of a good time, why not give me a try, and we'll see what stories we can tell.

I once ran a session...

In a heavily Modified Tyranny of Dragons game, my party encountered an Ancient Bronze Dragon who tested the party by launching them into a dreamscape future encounter, showing them what would happen if they failed to stop Tiamat's rise. A 9 hour (3 session) level 15 combat ensued. It was Glorious!

My games focus on...

Player choices and agency above everything. Modules are naught but guidelines. How the players fight the monster, sway the selfish lord, save the town, overcome their dark past or rally the kingdom is entirely in their hands. This is OUR ship, I just man the rudder and keep us off the rocks.

Rules are...

An important guideline to how we interact with the story and the world we craft, but the dice and the players tell the story best. The Rule of Cool will always prevail.

Dan's ideal table

My tables tend to be an eclectic mix of personalities and players. I enjoy giving a space for people to be social together. I have played with a plethora of ages and previous game experience. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I have played with an array of people from all walks of life and pride myself in being as open and welcoming as I can be. Combat's are engaging and intense, the inter-party roleplaying is something I love more than anything and highly encourage.

I love it when a player

Leans into their crafted backstory, making choices in their character's shoes. Being able to look at a situation and experience how your PC would react and reap the benefits or consequences is my favourite part of this little story telling hobby.

I think min/maxing...

Has it's place in d&d, this is a game after all, the mechanics are there to be used. The world of fantasy is full of Hercules' & Superman's. Being good at something isn't a hindrance. Good party synergy means there's always someone to bash a door in, unlock an ancient mystery or sweet talk an NPC.

My table is not the place for...

PvP & Murderhobos. Inter-party conflicts is part and parcel of RP, the same as it is in life. But freedom of choice is not the same as freedom of consequence, Taking your enjoyment at the expense of others' is not on. There is a time and a place for all things.
