I prep by

Doing my research. I spend a lot of time looking to the modules that are being played to refresh my memory. I look through my notes to remember what the team did. Test the VTT that we are using to make sure everything is runing smoothly.

Rules are...

There for a reason. They are the structure and skeleton of the game. With that being said I am all for adding flavor, context and creativity that keeps the rules in play but makes for awesome moments and experiences with each other.
