About Cuzin Merv (Brad)

Hello adventurers! Do you want to learn D&D 5e while enjoying story-time for big kids along with collective hallucinations and epic battles, all while using weird accents or bad puns? If you answered YES, then we're practically family already! I'm your Cuzin Merv, an experienced GM, storyteller, writer, maker, teacher, and father. Let's explore the depths and uncover the intrigue of Eberron. I enjoy an atmosphere as relaxed as the "Legends of Avantris" mixed with the chaos of "Muppet Treasure Island" but in a world as dangerous as "Arcane" (on Netflix). Join me if you want to make friends, love fantasy, and find breaking the rules fascinating. (*No puppets were harmed in the making of this advert.)

My favorite shows/movies are

Fantasy: Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Bass & Rankin's The Hobbit, and of course LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies, and many more. Scifi: MST3K, the Predator Franchise, the Aliens Franchise, and too many others to list. Documentaries: Ken Burns Lewis & Clark, history prior to the U.S. Civil War.

When I'm not running games I'm...

I work with educators adopting technology like 3D Printers and Lasers to their classrooms. At home we're building a little homestead in the country, pretending to be a peasant that doesn't have to fight off rampaging orcs.

How Cuzin Merv (Brad) runs games

I believe in the "rule of cool" and an easy-going, fun table so if you have a creative, wacky, or risky idea in combat, social encounters, skills, or otherwise, let's hear it! I want you to have as much fun with the story and fantasy genre as I do. Rules, species, and situations are never black and white, IMHO. And neither should a collaborative fantasy adventure with friends.

I prep by

... having played through the campaign settings, encounters, and even loot tables myself, with my own character builds. But am excited by every twist and reaction that new players take in every encounter.

My games focus on...

... dealing with common struggles of humanity in constantly changes fantastic settings, situations, and with creatures that aren't human at all. Themes of classism, prejudice, PTSD, violence, etc. and heroes trying to right those wrongs in a chaotic world.

Rules are...

a guideline so that everyone is on the same page, knows what to expect, and then a springboard to jump into a collaborative story.

Cuzin Merv (Brad)'s ideal table

1. A flexible, fun, relaxed setting. Where the rule of cool is best and respect for others is paramount. 2. Players who are curious about the world, the setting, the encounter and their fellow players. 3. Players who aren't afraid to try things. Mistakes happen. That's life. But you don't die, unless I have to TPK... then its just a new opportunity and new character to explore. 4. This is a relaxed time to have fun, be creative, and pretend to be heroes with new friends for a few hours.

I love it when a player

...attempts a unique way to use mundane items, low level magic, or something in the actual setting. (i.e. throwing the ashes from urns lining a crypt into the air to cover the invisible enemies. It made them easier to attack!)
