About Grimhir
Hello! I’m a 33-year-old British Dungeon Master living in the Netherlands. I moved here four years ago. I live with my fiancé and our two cats, I work from home during the week, and spend a considerable amount of my free time writing about places that don’t exist! I’ve been DMing several home games initially in roll20 and then later on, in foundry VTT for almost eight years with multiple groups of friends ranging from 3-8 player tables. The entirety of my sessions have been run in one continuous world of my own creation. What initially started as a one-shot dungeon crawl somehow became a continent-spanning adventure. Building it has given me a place to pour my love of creative writing and homebrew content that started because of a friend introducing me to D&D almost 9 years ago. I’m also planning to release a multi-part adventure set in that world in 2027 so other DMs and players can use the story as the starting point for adventures of their own. Outside of D&D, gaming is a big part of my life. My partner and I have been together since 2018, and we met online playing World of Warcraft. We still enjoy playing video games together and with friends, and that social side of gaming means a lot to me. It’s how I’ve spent time with people I care about, even when we haven’t been in the same place. My favourite films are both the Hobbit & Lord of the Rings trilogy, which probably won’t come as a tremendous shock given everything you’ve just read. I realise “fantasy enthusiast enjoys The Lord of the Rings” is hardly a startling personal revelation, but there we are.

My favorite books are
I tend to prefer audio books but my top three picks are easily, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, World of Warcraft: Arthas and Horus Rising by Dan Abnett.
My favorite system of all Time is
Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. It is what I have played with for the last 8 years and I can't seem to stop tweaking with it to make it as enjoyable as it can be for my players.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Usually creating content for future games, one-shots or other homebrew content that i'd like to use at a later date. As someone with extreme ADHD I tend to find myself consistently hyper-fixating on D&D in most of my down time.
How Grimhir runs games
Based on my current campaign I tend to lead towards a jack of all trades master of none approach. I create games with an equal amount of puzzles, combat and roleplay but I also try and ensure that I tailor my games towards what my players enjoy the most. When it comes to combat I tend to run it as being quite high stakes but fair. I feel like my players should always feel that sense of thrill yet horror when they first face their first boss or big NPC of a campaign story. When I lean into the roleplay I try to ensure that I do as good a job as I can at ensuring my players feel immersed, my voice acting skills aren't the best but if an accent is needed I'll always prefer to look stupid than just speak in the same dull British tone each time. Something important to note as my personal opinion. Rule of cool always beats rules as written :)

My favorite trope is...
A grand adventure, although I have some experience running shorter campaigns, I am a real sucker for extended year long campaigns of a rag-tag group of adventurers beating the BBEG in the most unconventional way possible.
Rules are...
Negotiable, I believe that the rulebook should be used as guidelines, rule of cool always wins at my table. That being said it is also very important that once a decision has been made, it is accepted by all and moved on from so we can enjoy each session without breaking immersion too much.
When it comes to voices
I do my best accents that I am capable of, I have a very limited history in voice acting so I can manage most British accents of which there are many. As I hope you will find out, European & American accents are my true final boss.
Grimhir's ideal table
My ideal table would likely be 4-6 players. Preferably people who enjoy different aspects of table-top gaming. I generally enjoy running games that cater to all kinds of players whether you're a combat expert, mechanical genius, skilled roleplayer, character min-maxxer or even the best note-taker. I feel like a mix of all aspects works best.

I love it when a player
Outsmarts me with extremely clever uses of the rules and game mechanics. Especially my homebrew ones. Draws others in with their deep roleplay and immerses the table with their energy. Has a deep respect for everyone at the table knowing the golden rule, you're all the main characters.
I think min/maxing...
Is a perfectly reasonable way to play, as long as you realise that at my table I run my games with homebrew rules that tend to land in such a way that makes all classes and races equal. However, building your character for fun is always encouraged.
My table is not the place for...
- Personal Attacks, Sexist, racist or other bigoted comments or jokes. - Trolling or deliberately derailing to ruin the experience for others. - Not being able to accept that the DM has the final say on vague rules, and players must respect these decisions.
