About Wylie Blanc

Hello I am Wylie. I have been obsessed with roleplaying( or roll whichever one you prefer) for close to 30 years. I started playing at age 18 with a group of theater people, using a dinner theater as our gaming venue. I love role playing, to be a brave adventurer who faces imaginary dangers while collaborating with other players in creating epic stories. Role playing is a wonderful hobby, as it fulfills several intrapersonal psychological needs. It promotes socialization, accountability, problem solving, responsibility, and it encourages empathy and compassion. All game systems do these things to some extent, it doesn't matter what system is used. I have learned a lot and I am still learning from role playing. I have played several different systems over the years, and in a variety of ways. I have played with pen and paper and handful of dice, I have LARPED some, and during/ after the pandemic I have been playing virtually. I am familiar with Foundry, and Roll20. Some of the game systems I have played are DnD ( from 2e to 5.5), White Wolf's World of Darkness( most notably Vampire, Werewolf, and Hunter), Pathfinder,Shadowrun, and Mutants and Masterminds. I have ran several campaigns with group sizes ranging from 3 up to 13. I enjoy watching players and their characters grow and change over the course of a campaign.

I got started GMing...

Mainly out of necessity. The GM I had been playing needed to take a break, and no one else stepped up to fill the void. I discovered how much fun it is to run a game instead of just being a player. There is a lot to it; however, it is highly rewarding to watch the players have fun and succeed!

My favorite books are

Actually, each a series of books. The first series I enjoy is the Sherlock Holmes books. I love how Sherlock can piece together what happened from clues and keen observation. The second series is the Arsene Lupin books. These books inspired the anime Lupin III. Finally the Drizzt books are a staple.

My favorite shows/movies are

I am a student of film and cinema. I find it difficult to narrow down my list to a few favorites. Some highlights include: Blade Runner ( or anything Ridley Scott makes), LOTR, The Matrix, The Dark Knight (I am also a huge Christopher Nolan fan). I also enjoy foreign language films.

How Wylie Blanc runs games

I am mainly focused on characters. I like well developed characters or characters with a strong concept that could be developed over time. I like deep diving into the minds, histories, hopes and dreams of a character. What makes them tick, how do they handle different challenges. I usually build stories around my characters using their backgrounds as much as possible. When combat occurs, I love it when a player does something cool. I like seeing innovation and creativity, so I encourage players to think differently or outside the box as it were. I strive for balance between having fun and staying focused on the present. Role playing is a collaboration between players, so as a game master it is my job to make sure everyone is having fun.

I deal with rules issues by...

First, acknowledging the rules issue. I will then reread the rule for better clarification and to see how the player might have interpreted it. I will ask how the player intends to use the rule, and then I will adjust accordingly. I am amenable to altering the ruling in favor of the player.

Rules are...

Necessary and a good starting point. Rules are in place to ensure that everyone at the table is treated equally and fairly. They provide a framework upon which everything else is built. There are two types of rules for RPGs: Rules as Written (RAW) and The Rule of Cool. Both are used in my games.

Wylie Blanc's ideal table

My ideal table is laid-back and friendly. I am a firm believer that gaming should be fun and not drama-filled. The real world is stressful enough. Gaming should be a place where people get together without all of the noise and stress of everyday life. Any drama or tension should be used in the game, that the characters, not the players, experience it. I have a background in theater, and so I enjoy well-developed characters that grow over time. As such, players who can adapt and grow their characters, and come to have a good time, are usually the ones that fit in well at my table.

I am for a vibe that's...

Is warm, friendly, and welcoming. I understand life can be stressful and full of drama. Gaming should be a way to release some of the tension and have a good time. For a few hours, you get to be someone else, whose biggest problem is how to survive a rampaging dragon!

My perfect party mix is

To be successful in any role-playing system, each character has a role to play. So the perfect party mix is one where most, if not all, of the roles are filled. Whether that is the front-line tank, the group healer, or simply the face of the group, everyone's role is important.
